US Public Sector Compliance, Security GRC

San Francisco, CA | New York City, NY

About Anthropic

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.

About the team

Anthropic's Security Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) team is the connective tissue that holds the company accountable to its security commitments. We translate regulatory, customer, and voluntary obligations into controls that teams act on, and give leadership a bird's-eye view of how well we're meeting them. We're building toward a fundamentally different kind of GRC: one that directs Claude, with the right humans in the loop, to challenge and evidence the performance of controls continuously rather than through periodic audits.

Within Security GRC, Compliance and Audit Programs (CAP) runs the integrated audit across our frameworks and maintains the Common Control Framework the program hangs off. This role sits in Compliance & Audit Programs and works one regime family, US public sector, from requirements through authorization and ongoing compliance, working alongside the public sector engineering pods rather than downstream of them.

About the role

You'll help drive the compliance programs that keep Anthropic's US government authorizations current: federal civilian (FedRAMP, including FedRAMP 20x for Claude Enterprise), Department of War (DoD impact levels, CMMC, NIST SP 800-171), and state and local (StateRAMP, TX-RAMP and agency requirements). You'll own the recurring cycles those authorizations run on (continuous monitoring, POA&M, annual assessments, significant changes), help build new authorizations as we add them, and keep every frontier model's authorizations current.

You'll turn government requirements into specific, testable requirements that engineering teams build against, review the evidence that comes back, and say so when a launch is not ready for a government boundary. You'll map US government requirements onto our Common Control Framework so the public sector view and the integrated audit view of the same control stay one framework. Building with Claude is a normal part of the job: mapping, evidence collection and reporting, with you deciding where human judgment stays in the loop.

This is an individual contributor role, working closely with a peer on US public sector compliance, for someone who works well independently, writes clearly, and gets satisfaction from a government authorization that holds up as the product changes underneath it.

Key responsibilities

  • Run the recurring compliance cycles for our US government authorizations (continuous monitoring, POA&M, annual assessments, SSP updates, significant changes and incident notifications), starting with C4G on Palantir FedStart and the NIST SP 800-171 assessment with Schellman
  • Co-own FedRAMP 20x work for Claude Enterprise, and help build new authorizations (first-party FedRAMP High, DoW impact levels, StateRAMP and TX-RAMP) with requirements and evidence work
  • Support model authorizations in GovCloud and Vertex for every model launch, as the GRC member of the Inference and model delivery pod
  • Translate government obligations into partner team requirements, for example vulnerability SLAs in our internal vulnerability reporting platform, and review the evidence
  • Answer public sector customer and deal questions (what a boundary allows, CUI, IRS Publication 1075, CJIS, ITAR), and handle questionnaires and RFIs until they move to Customer Trust
  • Map US government requirements onto the Common Control Framework with the Controls Assurance Lead and keep one source of truth for status
  • Build with Claude: automate mapping, evidence collection and reporting, and verify machine-drafted language before it becomes the record

Minimum qualifications

  • Several years in security compliance or IT audit with hands-on US government compliance for a cloud service (FedRAMP, DoD impact levels, CMMC or NIST SP 800-171, or StateRAMP), including the ongoing compliance cycle after authorization
  • Working command of the NIST SP 800-53 Moderate baseline and the mechanics of authorization: boundary definition, control implementation statements, assessment, continuous monitoring, POA&M and significant change
  • Experience writing requirements for engineering teams from a control baseline and reviewing the evidence that came back
  • Working knowledge of how a GovCloud or Vertex style government region differs from commercial, and what changes when a model, feature or region is added to an authorized boundary
  • Enough technical fluency to read a runbook, configuration or pipeline definition and judge whether it enforces the written control
  • Clear writing, because implementation statements and status reports are what assessors, engineers and leadership work from
  • Ability to get partner teams to prioritize and close compliance work without authority over them

Preferred qualifications

  • Have taken a service through FedRAMP High or DoD IL4 or IL5, or supported a service on classified networks
  • Have worked on a FedRAMP 20x pilot or built machine-readable evidence or reporting for an assessor
  • Have applied LLMs to compliance work such as control mapping, evidence testing or continuous evidence collection
  • Hold or are eligible for a US security clearance
  • Experience with state and local requirements such as StateRAMP, TX-RAMP, IRS Publication 1075 or CJIS

You don't need to

  • Have done everything on this list or worked every regime. The scarce combination is running a government authorization on its recurring cycle plus the judgment to tell whether a control actually works
  • Write production code. The bar is fluency sufficient to read, query and challenge
  • Hold every certification. CISSP, CISA, CGRC or similar are welcome and not required
  • Have prior AI industry experience

Deadline to apply: None. Applications will be received on a rolling basis.

The annual compensation range for this role is listed below.

For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role.

Logistics

Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience

We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.

Your safety matters to us. To protect yourself from potential scams, remember that Anthropic recruiters only contact you from @anthropic.com email addresses. In some cases, we may partner with vetted recruiting agencies who will identify themselves as working on behalf of Anthropic. Be cautious of emails from other domains. Legitimate Anthropic recruiters will never ask for money, fees, or banking information before your first day. If you're ever unsure about a communication, don't click any links—visit anthropic.com/careers directly for confirmed position openings.

How we're different

We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.

The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.

Agreement to Arbitrate

I understand and agree that both Anthropic and I waive our respective rights to trial by jury in connection with any claims covered by this agreement to arbitrate. Instead, any disputes arising out of or related to my application for employment with Anthropic shall be settled by final and binding arbitration pursuant to the Federal Arbitration Act. I understand and agree that Anthropic’s employees/agents, Anthropic’s clients, and their employees/agents are third-party beneficiaries to this agreement.

The arbitration shall be conducted in accordance with the Employment Arbitration Rules & Procedures of Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services, Inc. (“JAMS Rules”), available via the internet at https://www.jamsadr.com/rules-employment-arbitration or by searching for “JAMS Employment Arbitration Rules” in an online search service such as www.google.com. To the extent the JAMS Rules are inconsistent with the terms of this Agreement, this Agreement shall govern to the extent permitted by law. The parties will select one neutral arbitrator, who will have the authority to award all relief in law or equity that is requested by the parties and supported by credible, relevant, and admissible evidence. The arbitrator shall allow adequate discovery and issue a written, signed, and reasoned award. Judgement may be entered on the arbitrator’s award in any court having jurisdiction, and the award shall be subject to correction, confirmation, or vacation as provided by the applicable law concerning judicial review of arbitration awards. Anthropic will bear the costs that are particular to the arbitration, such as the arbitrator fees. The arbitrator will apply the substantive law of the state in which I sought employment with Anthropic. The arbitrator will determine the arbitration venue, based on fairness and convenience to the parties and witnesses, unless otherwise mutually agreed upon by the parties. The Party initiating a claim under this Agreement must make a written demand for arbitration to the other Party. The demand for arbitration shall identify the claims asserted, the facts upon which such claims are based, and any relief or remedy sought. Written demand for arbitration to Anthropic must be sent to Anthropic PBC at arbdemands@anthropic.com. Anthropic’s demand for arbitration shall be sent to the most recent mailing address and/or email address that Anthropic has on file for you.

This agreement to arbitrate does not apply to claims for workers’ compensation, unemployment compensation benefits, claims or charges before any administrative agency having jurisdiction over such claims, or any other claim that is not subject to arbitration under federal law. If any claims are deemed non-arbitrable, then those claims will be stayed until resolution of any arbitrable claims.

I understand and agree that, except where prohibited by federal law, all claims subject to this agreement to arbitrate must be pursued on an individual basis, and that both I and Anthropic waive any right to bring or be a party to any class or collective action. I agree that any issues pertaining to the enforceability, application or validity of this agreement to arbitrate shall be decided only by a court of competent jurisdiction and not by an arbitrator. This agreement to arbitrate applies only in the United States.
