The Director of Construction is responsible for the overall success of the construction sales and project management teams and an efficient approach to operations to maximize profits. They will ensure that the sales team is successful in meeting their annual sales goals. They will be involved in marketing to drive sales opportunities for the sales team. The Director is involved in all aspects of the construction sales process from bidding to invoicing. The Director of Construction ensures that daily business practices meet operational goals and produce maximum efficiency. They are responsible for hiring sales and project management staff, providing training, and implementing company practices to achieve the financial, operational, and sales goals of SWIMS/Apex. They will also advise the Division Manager and Associate Division Manager on sales, equipment and staffing needs.

Your Responsibilities as Director of Construction:

  • Lead and support team members in addressing employee needs, performance concerns, payroll issues, and escalated personnel matters.
  • Assign and oversee projects and tasks, ensuring alignment with operational goals and successful delivery.
  • Provide executive-level customer support for complex or escalated issues beyond project management.
  • Approve non-routine purchases in accordance with company policies and budget guidelines.
  • Participate in leadership and management meetings to drive alignment and strategic direction.
  • Lead hiring efforts, including identifying staffing needs, interviewing, and onboarding top talent.
  • Oversee PTO approvals and support overall workforce planning.
  • Foster strong communication and alignment across leadership, project management, and operational teams.
  • Lead regular team check-ins, performance discussions, and cross-functional collaboration efforts.
  • Partner with senior leadership to drive strategic initiatives and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee financial accountability measures, including review of project-related expenses and credit card usage.
  • Participate in quarterly leadership reviews and strategic planning sessions.
  • Ensure compliance with insurance requirements by overseeing employee and vehicle status tracking.
  • Drive employee development through performance reviews, coaching, and succession planning.

Construction Sales

  • Drive growth of SWIMS market share by securing profitable projects across all business lines (EC, SWEEP, QSP, DW).
  • Provide strategic oversight of large project estimates and pricing to ensure competitiveness and profitability.
  • Lead contract review and execution in partnership with Project Managers and Division leadership.
  • Oversee contract approvals and ensure alignment with financial, legal, and operational standards.
  • Monitor project pipeline, resource planning, and master scheduling to support efficient project delivery.
  • Serve as a key escalation point for project, pricing, and client-related matters.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Project Management, Accounting/Accounts Receivable (AR), and Marketing teams to support business objectives.
  • Analyze sales performance and drive initiatives to improve revenue, margins, and market positioning.

 

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Lead and facilitate key construction and project management meetings to drive alignment, accountability, and performance across teams.
  • Partner closely with Division leadership through regular touchpoints to align on strategy, financial performance, and operational priorities.
  • Foster cross-functional collaboration with Project Management, Finance, and Marketing to enhance project outcomes and business growth.
  • Serve as a key resource and escalation point for Project Managers, providing guidance on project challenges, pricing, and decision-making.

Operations – NorCal

  • Provide leadership and oversight to operations teams, ensuring alignment with project goals, performance expectations, and company standards.
  • Monitor workforce productivity, labor utilization, and operational efficiency across projects.
  • Oversee resource planning, including manpower, equipment, and scheduling, to support successful project execution.
  • Evaluate operational performance and implement improvements to drive efficiency and cost control.
  • Review and support planning for upcoming and large-scale construction projects.
  • Partner with operations leadership through regular communication to ensure alignment on priorities and execution.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or a related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive construction experience, including management of complex projects.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience, including team development and performance management.
  • Erosion control or related industry experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading estimating teams strongly preferred.

Annual Expected Pay Range

$80,000 - $120,000 USD
