Position Overview

Apex Skin is a physician-led and rapidly growing dermatology and pathology practice committed to delivering exceptional patient care and diagnostic accuracy. We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Histotechnician to support our pathology team by preparing high-quality tissue specimens for microscopic examination.

This role is responsible for all aspects of specimen processing, including accessioning, embedding, microtomy, staining, and quality control. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical ability, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining specimen integrity and laboratory compliance standards throughout all stages of processing.

Compensation Range

  • $18.00 - $20.00/hr
  • Based on relevant years of experience

Schedule

  • Full-time, hourly position
  • Typically scheduled for 8-hour shifts
  • Early start times required; most shifts begin around 6:30 AM or earlier
  • Schedule may vary based on operational needs

Essential Functions

Specimen Processing & Accessioning

  • Receive and accession specimens using the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
  • Verify all specimen identifiers, including containers, requisitions, and cassettes, prior to processing
  • Maintain strict specimen tracking and integrity throughout all stages of preparation
  • Perform grossing techniques including dissection, inking, and sectioning
  • Process one specimen at a time to ensure accuracy and prevent cross-contamination

Embedding, Sectioning & Slide Preparation

  • Properly embed tissue specimens with correct orientation
  • Perform microtomy to produce high-quality sections free of defects
  • Ensure slides meet laboratory quality standards, including full-face sections and proper staining
  • Perform recuts and additional preparations as needed

Staining & Advanced Procedures

  • Perform routine and special stains using approved protocols
  • Conduct immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining, including use of appropriate controls
  • Assist in validation processes for new antibodies and staining protocols
  • Prepare reagents, solutions, and stains according to laboratory standards

Quality Control & Compliance

  • Follow strict verification processes at each stage of specimen handling:
    • Requisition ↔ Container
    • Container ↔ Cassette
    • Cassette ↔ Slide
  • Maintain compliance with CAP, CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, and state regulations
  • Ensure proper labeling, storage, and disposal of chemicals
  • Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times

Equipment & Laboratory Maintenance

  • Operate, clean, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Perform daily cleaning and preventative maintenance
  • Document maintenance and troubleshooting activities
  • Notify leadership of equipment issues or supply needs

Operational Support

  • Assist pathologists and laboratory staff as needed
  • File, retrieve, and distribute slides, blocks, and reports
  • Monitor inventory levels and communicate supply needs
  • Answer laboratory phone calls and assist with inquiries
  • Stay current with updates to laboratory procedures and protocols

Qualifications

  • Completion of a NAACLS-accredited histotechnology program
    OR Associate degree with at least one year of histopathology experience under a pathologist
  • ASCP certification as a Histotechnician (HT) required
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and quality
  • Ability to follow strict protocols and maintain specimen integrity
  • Proficiency with laboratory systems and documentation practices
  • Experience with immunohistochemistry (IHC) preferred
  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) preferred

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Work performed in a laboratory setting with exposure to:
    • Chemical hazards
    • Bloodborne pathogens
    • Sharps and laboratory equipment
  • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, and performing fine motor tasks
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds
  • Requires strong visual acuity, including color differentiation and close vision
  • Must maintain focus and precision in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment
  • Required to follow all safety, hazard communication, and infection control protocols
