Senior Business Technology Engineer

Location: McLean, VA | Work Model: On-site

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Appian Business Technology team is the strategic engine driving our internal corporate infrastructure forward. We design, optimize, and scale the enterprise systems that empower Appian employees globally, ensuring our internal operations mirror the high-performance capabilities of our market-leading technology and enable our corporate growth in the automation market.

THE OPPORTUNITY

This lead role is designed for an elite systems expert who thrives at the intersection of enterprise architecture and technical execution. At Appian, you will have the autonomy to direct end-to-end system assessments, implement robust configuration and coding solutions, and pioneer methodologies to simulate user interactions before updates reach production—all while working face-to-face in a culture that champions collaboration and rapid technical innovation at our corporate headquarters.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Secure Environment & CMMC Management: Manage, govern, and maintain established secure IT enclaves compliant with Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) and NIST 800-171 frameworks. Ensure ongoing compliance of endpoints, infrastructure, and access controls against stringent federal and DoD standards.
  • Strict Patch Management Execution: Enforce and support rigorous patch management SLAs for OS and third-party applications across all environments. Continually test, deploy, and verify updates to maintain CMMC compliance, mitigate zero-day vulnerabilities, and ensure uninterrupted system functionality.
  • Monitor and address security vulnerabilities, partnering with security teams to mitigate risks.
  • Zero-Touch Provisioning: Maintain and improve automated onboarding/offboarding workflows using Windows Autopilot and Apple Business Manager / Automated Device Enrollment.
  • Scripting & Tooling: Write and maintain operational scripts (PowerShell, Bash, Python) to automate software distribution, settings configuration, and routine IT tasks.
  • Workflow Optimization: Identify manual IT support processes and build automated workflows to streamline operations and improve end-user resolution times
  • Tier-2 / Tier-3 Escalations: Serve as an escalation point for complex technical issues involving endpoint OS performance, policy conflicts, and software deployment failures.
  • Documentation & Standards: Maintain clear technical documentation, system configurations, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the IT team.
  • Cross-Team Execution: Partner with Information Security and Network teams to implement security controls and ensure endpoint compatibility with company systems.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree: Minimum of a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Information Technology, or a related technical discipline.
  • 4+ years of experience in desktop engineering or similar IT-related roles.
  • Demonstrated experience configuring, managing, and troubleshooting both Windows 10/11 and macOS operating systems in an enterprise setting.
  • Experience administering enterprise device management systems (e.g., Microsoft Intune for Windows; Jamf Pro, Addigy,NinjaOne, or Intune for macOS).
  • Working knowledge of PowerShell (Windows) and Bash / zsh (macOS) for administrative automation.
  • Practical experience with endpoint encryption, antivirus software deployment, and identity management basics (e.g., Microsoft Entra ID / Azure AD, Okta).
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across teams.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with zero-trust security models and endpoint protection tools.
  • Knowledge of cloud-based IT solutions (e.g., Azure AD, Google Workspace, AWS WorkSpaces).
  • Certifications: Microsoft Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator

The base salary range represents a good faith and reasonable estimate of the range at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s relevant work experience, qualifications, internal peer equity, and market and business conditions that exist when extending an offer. A discretionary bonus may be awarded in recognition of individual and company performance.

Pay and benefits are subject to change at any time, consistent with the terms of any applicable compensation, commission, bonus, or benefit plans.

Base Salary Range

$75,000 - $175,000 USD
