Application Engineer
Apptronik is building robots for the real world to improve human quality of life and to help solve the ever-increasing labor shortage problem. Our team has been building some of the most advanced robots on the planet for years, dating back to the DARPA Robotics Challenge. We apply our expertise across the full robotics stack to some of the most important and impactful problems our society faces, and expect our products and technology to change the world for the better. We value passion, creativity, and collaboration to help us overcome existing technological barriers in the industry to create truly innovative products.
You will join a team developing state-of-the-art general-purpose robots designed to operate in human spaces and with human tools. It is designed to work alongside humans, mobilize to human spaces, and manipulate the world around it.
We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic Applications Engineer to join our team and play a key role in supporting our humanoid robot deployments worldwide. As an Applications Engineer, you will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting our humanoid robots at customer sites. You will work closely with customers to ensure the smooth operation of our robots and provide technical support to address any issues that arise. This is a customer-facing engineering role, where you will gather and refine customer requirements and help transform these into a fully integrated solution - a combination of humanoid robots with the broader ecosystem of external software and hardware. These solutions will be developed and subsequently deployed at customer sites.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES or KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Requirements Gathering: collaborate with Sales and Customer Success to visit customer sites and analyze their existing workflows and operational bottlenecks. Capture detailed technical insights in a site visit report to effectively communicate findings to internal teams. Serve as the technical expert in customer interactions, providing guidance on system capabilities, integration and implementation.
- Solution Architecture and Implementation: Use insights from site visits to design how our humanoid robot can solve customer problems with minimal changes to their existing workflows and infrastructure.
- Integration and Testing: Build workcells at HQ that closely replicate the customer environment. Integrate and test the full solution - including robots, FMS, WMS’s, WES’s, MES’s, safety systems, networking and data platform - to ensure seamless operation. Identify and communicate hardware and software issues to the engineering teams, and track resolution to ensure system readiness.
- Deployments: Serve as the first engineering team at customer sites after the solution has been validated at HQ. Lead cross-functional teams to build, integrate and test workcells - ensuring all hardware and software components function cohesively as intended. Conduct the SAT and ensure a successful handoff to the Service team.
- Customer/Partner Training: Develop clear and comprehensive training materials - including SOPs, how-to videos, troubleshooting guides and training courses - to train our partners and customers..
SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong technical skills and hands-on experience with robotic/electromechanical systems, including hardware and software components.
- Excellent problem-solving and project management skills, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, customer-facing environment.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with customers and effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Familiarity with humanoid robotics concepts, such as kinematics, dynamics, and motion planning, is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, C/C++, and ROS (Robot Operating System).
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally to customer sites as needed (approximately 30%-50% travel).
- Familiarity with warehouse management systems, fleet management systems, manufacturing execution systems, data analytics, networking infrastructure and functional safety systems on mobile robots and industrial workcells is highly desirable.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Proven experience in field service or technical support roles, preferably in the robotics industry.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to lift 25-45 pounds at times
- Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen
- Hearing and speech to communicate
- International travel likely; passport highly desired
- Travel up to 50% may be required
Perks:
- Competitive salary w/ benefits
- Highly motivating equity incentive package
- Flexible work hours policy
- Professional development opportunities
- Generous Paid Time Off (PTO)
- 401k plan
