Scientist, Assay Development and Screening

Berkeley, CA

About the Company

We envision a world where we continuously, sustainably, and affordably improve human life with synthetic biology. Our proprietary set of enzymes and our manufacturing approach enables the production of thousands of amino acids that were previously too difficult and expensive to make. These “noncanonical” amino acids that we make are already catalyzing the creation of revolutionary and innovative products that are good for people and the planet.

Our technology outperforms traditional manufacturing approaches by 10–100x across the board. We already sell products to Big 10 Pharmaceutical companies, and our product family includes the key components of multi-billion dollar blockbuster drugs such as Ozempic and Mounjaro.

We are a diverse, passionate, interdisciplinary team that finds joy in building something new that leaves the world better than we found it. We strive to always learn and improve and have a deep desire to capitalize on our creativity and be exceptional at what we do.

About the role

We’re seeking a highly-talented scientist to play a critical role in revealing the potential of the products we make. As an onsite teammate on the R&D team, your work will be a significant driver of progress to improve our platform and expand our understanding of noncanonical amino acids (ncAAs) properties and novel applications. There’s so much exploration to be done as we find more ways our chemistry can benefit human health and the world around us. If this is as exciting to you as it is to us, we encourage you to apply!

What You’ll Do

  • Develop and execute automated, high-throughput workflows for screening libraries of compounds (i.e. ncAA and peptides), including the use of liquid-handling robotics and integration of analytical tools such as microplate readers and LC-MS.
  • Help define properties of ncAAs to screen for and devise screening strategies, to help us (and our customers) unlock the vast possibilities of ncAA chemistry for drug development and beyond.
  • Expand our R&D platform and help build an internal structure-function database for ncAAs.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data.
  • Collaborate with a fantastic multidisciplinary team.

What You’ll Bring

  • PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Biology or a related field, ideally with industry experience, or master’s degree in these fields with 4-6 years of industry experience.
  • Proven track record in developing and running assays for library screening.
  • Substantial experience with diverse analytical techniques, such as spectrophotometry, LC/MS, and HPLC.
  • Comfort in owning Design of Experiments (DoE) and statistical data analysis techniques in the work.
  • Programming experience using Jupyter notebooks and Python scripts and/or R scripts is a plus.
  • Experience setting up and running liquid-handling lab automation to turn manual processes into automated workflows.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Thrives as part of a team, with a strong collaborative mindset.
  • Strong initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Proactive in identifying, analyzing, and solving problems.
  • Excitement around taking abstract questions into meticulously developed processes to get scientific, reliable answers.
