The Senior Payroll Business Analyst serves as a subject matter expert across Payroll, with broad knowledge of payroll processing, payroll tax, payroll data, reporting, business processes, and supporting technologies. This role serves as the primary functional liaison between Payroll and Technology, translating business needs into requirements and assessing downstream impacts. The role also maintains hands-on payroll expertise through regular participation in payroll processing and provides cross-functional support to Payroll Operations and Payroll Tax. As needed, this role also supports payroll tax amendments, year-end processing, and other critical Payroll activities.

A Day in the Life: 

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of end-to-end payroll processes, including payroll processing, payroll tax, timekeeping, deductions, earnings, associate data, reporting, and interfaces.
  • Regularly process payroll to maintain knowledge of procedures, system functionality, business rules, and operational challenges.
  • Serve as a backup resource for Payroll Operations and Payroll Tax and provide support for complex payroll questions.
  • Serve as Payroll’s primary functional liaison with Technology for system enhancements, integrations, reporting, defects, and technical support requests.
  • Translate Payroll business needs into clear functional requirements and participate in technology projects as the Payroll subject matter expert.
  • Evaluate proposed process and system changes to identify risks, dependencies, and upstream or downstream impacts before implementation.
  • Coordinate requirements gathering, testing, validation, implementation, and post-implementation review of payroll-related changes.
  • Partner with Technology to research and resolve system issues, defects, integration failures, and other technical problems.
  • Manage and monitor ServiceNow tickets for the Payroll team, including prioritization, follow-up, escalation, and resolution tracking.
  • Maintain visibility into open Payroll technology requests and assist with prioritization, follow-up, testing, and implementation.

    Payroll Data & Reporting

    • Serve as the Payroll subject matter expert for data and reporting requests.
    • Understand how Payroll data originates, moves between systems, is stored, and is used throughout the payroll process.
    • Partner with Technology and report developers to define requirements, identify data elements, validate business logic, and ensure reports meet Payroll needs.
    • Validate payroll reports and data outputs for accuracy and completeness and assist with identifying data inconsistencies and root causes.

     

     

  • Process Improvement & Controls

    • Evaluate Payroll processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, automation, accuracy, scalability, data integrity, and sustainability.
    • Partner with Payroll leadership, Payroll Operations, Payroll Tax, Technology, and other key stakeholders to address business and system challenges.
    • Document business processes, system requirements, business rules, workflows, and dependencies.
    • Support strong payroll controls and validation procedures and ensure changes are tested from an end-to-end Payroll perspective before deployment.

Necessary Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Information Systems, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Extensive payroll experience with strong knowledge of end-to-end payroll processing, payroll taxation, and related compliance requirements.
  • Experience working with payroll, HRIS, timekeeping, and related business systems, including understanding how payroll data flows between systems and processes.
  • Experience partnering with Technology or other technical teams and gathering requirements, testing system changes, validating data, and supporting implementations or enhancements.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to identify impacts and explain complex payroll requirements to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and take ownership of complex issues through resolution.
  • FPC or CPP certification a plus.
