Industrial Organizational (I/O) Psychologist

Springfield, Virginia

ASI Government provides government leaders with the expertise they need to navigate acquisition and organizational challenges so they can make an impact and achieve their goals. For over 30 years, ASI has transformed the way government does business, impacting over 70 government agencies across the civilian, defense, and intelligence communities.

Do you thrive on creating unique and impactful value for Federal clients? Are you passionate about partnering with clients and collaborating to create solutions? Do you enjoy the opportunity to drive change that impacts our nation?

We are looking for smart, curious, driven individuals to join us in partnering with our client to help them solve some of the nation’s most challenging problems. ASI Government serves as a trusted adviser to government leaders seeking improved performance, enhanced organization effectiveness, and strategic change.

ASI is seeking an Industrial Organizational Psychologist to support behavioral science, performance measurement, and evidence-based service improvement for the Transportation Security Administration. The consultant will work with ASI and client leaders, survey researchers, data analysts, dashboard developers, communications specialists, and process improvement practitioners to design rigorous measurement approaches, analyze human-centered data, and translate findings into practical recommendations for leaders and operational stakeholders.

This is an early-to-mid-career role with meaningful ownership and access to senior technical guidance. The strongest candidate will combine sound I/O psychology methods with curiosity, clear communication, and the ability to work across disciplines. Broad experience in organizational development, performance management, leadership or behavioral assessment, and executive advising would be valuable, but the role does not require the depth of experience expected of a senior I/O psychologist or independent practice leader.

Key Responsibilities

Research Design and Measurement

  • Apply I/O psychology and behavioral science principles to the design, refinement, and evaluation of customer experience, employee behavior, service delivery, and performance measures.
  • Support development of scientifically sound surveys, observation tools, interview and focus group protocols, rating scales, and other quantitative and qualitative research instruments.
  • Help define measurable constructs and translate broad concepts such as trust, professionalism, respect, hospitality, confidence, clarity, and service quality into clear indicators and observable behaviors.
  • Review measurement approaches for validity, reliability, fairness, bias, clarity, respondent burden, and alignment with the intended decision or operational use.
  • Develop research plans, analysis plans, data dictionaries, scoring guidance, quality-control procedures, and methodological documentation that support consistent administration and interpretation.

Passenger Experience Survey Support

  • Support the full Passenger Experience Survey lifecycle, including instrument design, cognitive and usability review, Paperwork Reduction Act documentation, administrator training, quality controls, data review, analysis, reporting, and airport-level follow-up.
  • Preserve longitudinal comparability while helping the team evaluate proposed survey changes, subgroup analyses, airport classifications, screening channels, traveler characteristics, and emerging measurement
  • Collaborate with the project manager and technical leads to identify methodological risks, clarify assumptions, document decisions, and keep research activities aligned with milestones and deliverables.
  • Help interpret national and airport-level results and support retrospectives that connect findings to operational strengths, service barriers, improvement opportunities, and practical action planning.

Statistical Analysis and Evidence Synthesis

  • Conduct and document appropriate descriptive and inferential analyses, which may include scale evaluation, reliability analysis, correlations, confidence intervals, subgroup comparisons, factor analysis, trend analysis, and other methods suited to the research question and data.
  • Analyze quantitative results alongside open-ended feedback, observational data, operational information, and other approved sources to develop a coherent view of performance and experience.
  • Partner with data analysts and visualization specialists to validate calculations, define measures, review dashboard logic, identify data-quality concerns, and ensure visualizations accurately represent the underlying
  • Clearly communicate analytical limitations, uncertainty, appropriate interpretation, and the difference between correlation, association, and causal evidence.
  • Maintain reproducible analysis files, documentation, and quality checks using Government-approved tools and

Behavioral Performance and Service Improvement

  • Support development and refinement of observable behavior frameworks that connect passenger perceptions, supervisory observations, training, coaching, and operational improvement.
  • Help evaluate whether measurement tools and improvement efforts are producing the intended changes in behavior, customer experience, trust, service quality, and related performance outcomes.
  • Translate findings into practical recommendations for communications, training, coaching, job aids, process changes, measurement updates, or additional research.
  • Contribute behavioral science expertise to emerging quality assurance, service delivery, traveler support, workforce, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Support structured action planning and feedback loops that allow leaders and field stakeholders to test, learn, adjust, and sustain improvements.

Reporting Dashboards and Decision Support

  • Develop clear technical reports, executive summaries, briefing slides, research readouts, methodological notes, and recommendations for technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Explain complex measures and analytical results in plain language so leaders can use dashboards and research findings to strengthen accountability, efficiency, trust, and service delivery.
  • Collaborate with the team on OMB Circular A-11 Section 280, Government Service Delivery Improvement Act, DHS, TSA, and other applicable customer experience and performance reporting needs.
  • Support rapid-turn ad hoc insight reports by helping define the question, select an appropriate method, analyze available evidence, identify limitations, and develop decision-relevant findings.
  • Review reports, dashboards, and communications for methodological accuracy, consistent data values, defensible claims, and appropriate use of behavioral science terminology.

Client and Team Collaboration

  • Participate in client meetings, research discussions, working sessions, and airport retrospectives; build productive relationships and clearly document decisions, assumptions, unresolved questions, and next
  • Work collaboratively across survey research, project management, analytics, visualization, communications, organizational development, and process improvement activities rather than treating behavioral science as a stand-alone function.
  • Manage assigned tasks and small workstreams with reliable follow-through, communicate risks or competing priorities early, and seek senior review when methodological or client judgment warrants it.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in industrial organizational psychology or a closely related behavioral science field with substantial graduate-level training in I/O psychology, research methods, psychometrics, and statistics.
  • Approximately four to seven years of relevant applied experience in I/O psychology, behavioral science, survey research, assessment, performance measurement, organizational research, consulting, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience designing or evaluating surveys, assessments, rating scales, observational tools, interviews, focus groups, or other human-centered research methods.
  • Working knowledge of validity, reliability, measurement error, sampling, bias, subgroup analysis, research ethics, and the appropriate interpretation of quantitative and qualitative evidence.
  • Experience applying statistical techniques and using at least one analytical platform such as SPSS, R, Python, SAS, Stata, or an equivalent tool, along with strong Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Ability to synthesize complex evidence and communicate findings, limitations, and recommendations clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Strong writing, presentation, collaboration, critical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and produce accurate work under established and, at times, tight deadlines.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the applicable Department of Homeland Security fitness determination, Public Trust, facility access, and system access.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree or progress toward a doctorate in industrial organizational psychology, business psychology, organizational psychology, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in data visualization tools such as PowerBI or Tableau
  • Experience supporting a Federal Government, Department of Homeland Security, transportation, national security, or other large mission-oriented organization.
  • Experience with large-scale survey administration, longitudinal research, multilevel or clustered data, text analytics, data visualization, or dashboard development.
  • Experience in performance management, organizational development or design, employee or customer experience, leadership assessment, behavioral assessment, workforce research, training evaluation, or change measurement.
  • Experience helping leaders use behavioral or performance data to make decisions and communicate accountability, improvement priorities, or organizational outcomes.

Success in the Role

  • Applies rigorous methods without overcomplicating the work and selects approaches that fit the question, available evidence, timeline, and operational context.
  • Earns trust by producing careful, defensible analysis and explaining what the evidence does and does not
  • Connects passenger feedback, observed behaviors, operational information, and performance measures to practical recommendations leaders and field stakeholders can use.
  • Improves the methodological quality, clarity, and usefulness of surveys, dashboards, reports, behavioral frameworks, and ad hoc insight products.
  • Owns defined tasks and workstreams, uses senior expertise appropriately, and develops toward broader performance management, organizational research, behavioral assessment, and advisory

As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 07/31/2029

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
