About the Role
We are looking for a Data Engineer with strong AWS infrastructure expertise to design, build, and operate the cloud data platform that powers analytics and reporting for a U.S. healthcare client. In this role, you will own the end-to-end data pipeline lifecycle—from ingesting healthcare data feeds to modeling and serving curated datasets—while ensuring the platform meets rigorous HIPAA and HITRUST security and compliance standards. You will work closely with data analysts, platform engineers, and client stakeholders in a collaborative, agile environment where reliability, data quality, and compliance are paramount.
What You Will Do
Data Platform Engineering
- Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines on AWS using S3, Glue, Redshift, Athena, and EMR.
- Develop and optimize ETL/ELT workflows to ingest, transform, and curate structured and semi-structured data at scale.
- Tune Redshift and Athena workloads for performance and cost efficiency across the platform.
Infrastructure as Code & Orchestration
- Provision and manage AWS data infrastructure using Terraform and/or CloudFormation, following infrastructure-as-code best practices.
- Build, schedule, and monitor workflow orchestration with Apache Airflow, including DAG design, dependency management, and alerting.
- Implement CI/CD practices for data pipeline code and infrastructure changes.
Healthcare Data Integration
- Ingest and process healthcare data feeds from EHR systems, including FHIR and HL7 interfaces.
- Collaborate with client teams to map, validate, and reconcile clinical and operational data sources.
Security & Compliance
- Implement and maintain HIPAA and HITRUST controls across the data platform, including encryption, access management, auditing, and data retention.
- Partner with security and compliance teams to support audits, risk assessments, and remediation efforts.
Collaboration & Quality
- Establish data quality checks, monitoring, and observability across pipelines.
- Document architecture, data flows, and operational runbooks; contribute to engineering standards and peer reviews.
What You Bring
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Experience
- 4+ years of experience in data engineering, with at least 2 years building data platforms on AWS.
- Proven experience operating production data pipelines at scale in cloud environments.
- Experience working with healthcare data and regulated environments is strongly preferred.
Technical Expertise
- Strong hands-on experience with the AWS data stack: S3, Glue, Redshift, Athena, and EMR.
- Proficiency with infrastructure as code using Terraform and/or CloudFormation.
- Solid experience building and operating workflows with Apache Airflow.
- Strong SQL skills and proficiency in Python (or a comparable language) for data processing.
- Working knowledge of HIPAA/HITRUST security controls and data privacy practices.
- Familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards such as FHIR, HL7, and EHR data models.
Certifications
- AWS certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Data Engineer, Solutions Architect) are a plus.
- Security or healthcare compliance certifications (e.g., HITRUST, CHDA) are a plus.
