Employment type: Internship
About the role
We are looking for a Facilities Intern to help keep Astera Labs workplaces and hardware-engineering environments safe, reliable, organized, and ready for the teams that use them. This is a hands-on opportunity to learn how Facilities supports maintenance, space and equipment planning, lab operations, access and safety processes, service requests, vendors, and continuous improvement.
You will work with Facilities, Lab, Security, IT, HR, engineering teams, vendors, and other partners to coordinate practical work across offices and lab spaces. The right candidate is visible, proactive, dependable, and comfortable combining on-site follow-through with organized documentation, data analysis, and clear communication.
What you’ll do
-
Support day-to-day Facilities operations, service requests, work orders, maintenance coordination, and follow-up across office and lab spaces.
-
Help track facility issues, owners, priorities, timelines, dependencies, and resolution status through approved systems and team processes.
-
Assist with workspace, lab, bench, rack, equipment, and storage planning by collecting information, maintaining trackers, and preparing summaries.
-
Support inspections and maintenance activities for workspaces, building systems, environmental systems, fire and life-safety equipment, and other facility assets under appropriate supervision.
-
Help coordinate vendor visits, deliveries, access requirements, equipment moves, and facilities-related communications.
-
Maintain accurate records for equipment, work orders, access requests, inspections, incidents, and other operational documentation.
-
Support physical-access and visitor processes by organizing requests, maintaining records, and following established security and escort procedures.
-
Assist with emergency-preparedness activities, drills, checklists, event summaries, and follow-up actions as assigned.
-
Prepare Excel analyses, dashboards, status reports, presentations, and executive summaries that make facilities needs and progress easy to understand.
-
Collaborate with Lab, Engineering, Security, IT, HR, Finance, Procurement, and external partners to clarify needs and keep work moving.
-
Identify recurring issues, process gaps, and opportunities to improve facilities service, safety awareness, documentation, and operational efficiency.
-
Own a defined internship project with mentor support, provide progress updates, demonstrate measurable impact, and present the project’s results and recommendations at the end of the internship.
What you bring
-
Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in facilities management, engineering, business, operations, construction management, environmental health and safety, or a related field.
-
Strong organization, attention to detail, follow-through, and willingness to be hands-on in office and lab environments.
-
Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, with the ability to create clear trackers, reports, dashboards, and presentations.
-
Ability to learn new systems and processes, maintain accurate records, and communicate status clearly.
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills and comfort collaborating with employees, engineering teams, vendors, and cross-functional partners.
-
Safety-conscious judgment and discretion when working around facilities, equipment, access controls, visitors, and business-sensitive information.
-
Ability to manage multiple priorities, ask questions, receive feedback, and adapt when operational needs change.
-
A proactive, dependable, learning-oriented approach and interest in improving how facilities work gets done.
Preferred qualifications
-
Experience with facilities, office, lab, construction, maintenance, safety, equipment, vendor, event, or project coordination through coursework, projects, internships, or campus activities.
-
Familiarity with ticketing or collaboration tools such as Jira or Confluence, spreadsheets, work-order tracking, or facilities documentation.
-
Exposure to building systems, space planning, lab environments, physical security, emergency preparedness, ergonomics, or environmental health and safety.
-
Experience creating process documentation, inspection checklists, dashboards, inventory trackers, or other operational materials.
-
Interest in facilities data, resource planning, continuous improvement, and reliable service delivery.
