Product Engineering Intern

About the role

As a Product Engineering Intern, you will help support Astera Labs semiconductor products throughout the product lifecycle—from concept and engineering samples through characterization, qualification, production release, and continuous improvement. You will work alongside experienced product, test, hardware, validation, firmware/software, packaging, quality, and operations engineers to turn product requirements and test data into reliable, manufacturable products.

This is a hands-on opportunity to apply your coursework to semiconductor product development, data-driven problem solving, and hardware/software systems. You will contribute to meaningful work with visible product impact, receive mentorship, and communicate your results to technical stakeholders.

What you’ll do

• Learn Astera Labs products, architectures, datasheets, test requirements, and product-engineering processes.

• Support product development activities across characterization, qualification, engineering samples, manufacturing release, and post-release improvement.

• Review product requirements, datasheets, test plans, test coverage, characterization plans, qualification plans, and related engineering documentation.

• Help debug automated test equipment (ATE) failures through data analysis, bench correlation, and collaboration with test and hardware engineers.

• Analyze product-performance, yield, correlation, and test data across wafer sort, package test, burn-in, and other product-development stages.

• Assist with statistical analysis, test-limit setting, margin analysis, and the preparation of characterization, qualification, quality, and product-performance reports.

• Participate in board and test-hardware design reviews, including load boards, qualification boards, and other hardware used to evaluate semiconductor products.

• Help investigate low-yielding lots, test escapes, quality issues, and customer returns, and support root-cause and corrective-action activities.

• Work with design, design verification, design-for-test, hardware, firmware/software, packaging, OSAT, validation, test engineering, quality, product applications, and program-management teams.

• Prepare clear technical documentation, data summaries, and presentations that explain your approach, findings, impact, and learning.

• Present your intern project results and learnings to the team at the end of the internship.

What you bring

• Current enrollment in a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD program in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or a related technical field.

• Strong technical fundamentals and evidence of applying them through coursework, laboratory work, research, internships, co-ops, senior design, hackathons, or personal projects.

• Interest in semiconductor products, computer systems, digital or mixed-signal electronics, hardware/software systems, product testing, validation, or manufacturing.

• Ability to build, test, debug, analyze, and explain technical work—not simply list tools or technologies.

• Familiarity with at least one programming or scripting language, such as Python, C/C++, or MATLAB, through coursework or projects.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, curiosity, and willingness to learn quickly.

• Interest in working with data, automation, visualization, measurement results, or reproducible engineering workflows.

• Clear written and verbal communication and comfort collaborating across multiple engineering and operations teams.

• Ability to work on-site in San Jose and contribute effectively within a team.

Preferred experience includes coursework, research, or projects involving semiconductor testing, product characterization, computer architecture, networking, PCIe, Ethernet, high-performance systems, AI/ML workloads, data analysis, or hardware/software integration.

Internship experience and compensation

This is a paid, hourly U.S. internship. The applicable hourly rate is determined as part of the offer process and specified in the offer letter, depending on education level ranges form $35/hour to $55/hour. U.S. interns currently receive a $500-per-week housing/relocation stipend for the duration of the internship. Interns participate in Early Career programming, including technical and professional-development sessions, community events, and an end-of-program project presentation.
