Production Quality Engineer
As a team, we’ve launched five satellites into orbit, signed ten commercial deals worth over $1 billion in revenue, raised over $750 million from top global investors, and recruited a team of over 400 world-class engineers. We all work out of our (legendary) San Francisco office, which was once used to build ships during the World Wars.
Our satellites, which operate from geostationary orbit (GEO), weigh only 400 kg and utilize a proprietary software-defined radio payload. Each satellite can connect over two million people, and we’re very excited for the impact we’ll soon have in the Philippines, Peru, Mexico, and more!
Backed by substantial funding and a passionate, collaborative team, we offer a rewarding work environment where you'll learn and make a significant impact, no matter where you are in your career.
Production Quality Engineer
As a Production Quality Engineer at Astranis, you’ll play a key role in building high-reliability satellite hardware as we expand our manufacturing capabilities. You’ll work closely with engineering and production teams to solve complex quality challenges, lead root cause investigations, and help ensure our hardware meets the rigorous standards required for spaceflight.
We’re looking for a hands-on engineer with experience in electronics or electro-mechanical hardware manufacturing, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and a strong track record of working effectively in dynamic environments.
Role
- Perform and support quality functions such as nonconformance resolution, first article inspection, root cause analysis, corrective actions, containments, statistical process control, etc.
- Collaborate with design engineering teams to develop standards for part drawings, including identification of key characteristics, dimensioning and GD&T, and first article inspection plans for electro-mechanical assemblies.
- Write and maintain quality management system (QMS) command media to govern how we design, build, and test hardware.
- Perform process validation for new manufacturing processes in collaboration with production engineering.
- Monitor key quality metrics such as product yield and in-process inspection results to help identify trends and areas for improvement.
- Participate in quality reviews and audits to ensure adherence to process requirements and design intent.
- Support process improvements that enhance manufacturability, reduce defects, or streamline production flow.
- Contribute to the definition and enforcement of factory standards such as ESD handling and cleanliness requirements.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering discipline.
- 3+ years of experience in a quality or manufacturing engineering role.
- Experience with inspection techniques and basic GD&T principles.
- Basic proficiency in Python or SQL for data analysis.
- Familiarity with root cause analysis, corrective action, and basic quality tools (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone, Pareto).
- Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.
Bonus
- Experience with CAD, PLM, or ERP systems such as Solidworks, Altium, and Arena.
- Hands-on experience qualifying and maintaining manufacturing processes for electronics and/or mechanical assemblies.
- Experience reviewing design documentation and implementing first-article inspection plans.
- Strong SQL and Python skills, and demonstrated ability to manage large data sets and create useful tools/dashboards/reports for others.
- Demonstrated application of process validation and control methods such as PFMEA, design of experiments (DOE), and statistical process control (SPC).
Base Salary
