A-TEK is seeking a motivated Junior Audio Visual Designer to support a federal customer in Montgomery County, Maryland. The Junior AV Designer will help develop audiovisual system designs for conference rooms, conference centers, training rooms, auditoriums, collaboration spaces, and other specialized environments serving diverse audiences.
The position requires strong hands-on AV installation experience, developing design and drafting skills, and a practical understanding of how audiovisual systems are built, operated, and maintained. The selected candidate will work with senior designers, engineers, project managers, architects, IT teams, installation personnel, and customer stakeholders.
We are seeking someone who is technically capable, curious, receptive to coaching, and hungry to learn. The ideal candidate wants to build on field experience and grow into an independent audiovisual designer.
Ability to obtain and retain a Public Trust-level clearance is required. This is on-site at the client location based in Rockville, MD.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the design of conference rooms, training spaces, auditoriums, conference centers, and collaboration environments.
- Develop and update AV drawings, including system diagrams, signal flows, equipment layouts, rack elevations, wiring diagrams, reflected ceiling plans, and as-built documentation.
- Support the selection and specification of displays, projectors, cameras, microphones, loudspeakers, digital signal processors, control systems, switching equipment, and conferencing technologies.
- Conduct site surveys and document room dimensions, equipment locations, cable pathways, power, network connections, sightlines, acoustical conditions, and installation constraints.
- Apply installation experience to ensure designs are practical, buildable, maintainable, and clearly understood by field technicians.
- Coordinate with senior designers, architects, engineers, project managers, installers, IT teams, facility personnel, and customers.
- Incorporate redlines, design comments, field changes, and installation updates into project documentation.
- Assist with system installation, configuration, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting as needed.
- Maintain organized drawings, equipment lists, cable schedules, bills of materials, and revision records.
- Participate in design reviews, manufacturer training, certification programs, and other professional development activities.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma (or equivalent)
- Two or more years of commercial AV installation, integration, field-service, or related technical experience.
- Experience installing and connecting displays, projectors, cameras, microphones, loudspeakers, AV racks, cabling, switchers, extenders, and conferencing equipment.
- Basic understanding of audio and video signal flow, control systems, equipment racks, structured cabling, and TCP/IP networking.
- Ability to read architectural plans, wiring diagrams, technical drawings, and construction documents.
- Functional Experience using AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, Visio, or similar drafting tools.
- Ability to conduct site surveys and accurately document field conditions.
- Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and willingness to accept technical direction and feedback.
- Demonstrated initiative, curiosity, and commitment to learning AV design technologies and practices.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust-level clearance.
Preferred Qualifications (Not required for consideration)
- AVIXA CTS certification.
- Autodesk Certified Professional (ACP)
- CTS-D certification or active progress toward obtaining it.
- Three or more years of commercial AV installation experience.
- Experience producing or modifying audiovisual design drawings.
- Familiarity with Crestron, Extron, Q-SYS, Biamp, Dante, Shure, Microsoft Teams Rooms, Zoom Rooms, or Cisco Webex.
- Experience with AV-over-IP, Digital Signal Processing, unified communications, or control systems.
- Experience supporting federal, healthcare, scientific, academic, or other complex institutional environments.
- Familiarity with ADA accessibility requirements, Section 508 principles, building codes, and AV construction practices.
Compensation Salary Range: $85,000 – $90,000 annually (commensurate with experience)
