The consultant will work closely with the ERP Strategic Advisor and the client's functional and technical teams to resolve persistent payroll-related issues, with a focus on journal accuracy, deferred pay, fringe allocations, costing, and integration with Finance. This is a three-month contract with the possibility of extension based on project needs and consultant performance.
Job Responsibilities
- Conduct detailed analysis of current payroll processes, with a focus on deferred pay setup, fringe benefit allocations, and costing accuracy.
- Evaluate payroll journal entries and identify root causes of misalignment with accounting expectations and GAAP principles.
- Collaborate with Finance, HCM, and IT stakeholders to identify and resolve configuration gaps or process breakdowns in Workday Payroll.
- Recommend and implement configuration improvements or workarounds to support accurate journal generation and fringe allocation across funds and units.
- Review and improve costing allocations and ensure they are correctly mapped to worktags and financial structures.
- Develop and support payroll-related reporting and reconciliation processes, working with the reporting team to ensure data accuracy.
- Provide hands-on support for payroll processing as needed, including testing and validation of payroll runs, adjustments, and retroactive corrections.
- Document findings, configuration changes, and process recommendations in clear and actionable formats.
- Support knowledge transfer to internal staff and provide training or job aids as needed to ensure sustainable operations post-engagement.
Required Experience
- 5+ years of experience supporting Workday Payroll in higher education or public sector environments.
- Strong understanding of deferred pay, fringe benefit allocation, and Workday costing allocations.
- Proven experience with Workday journal entries, payroll accounting, and payroll-to-finance integrations.
- Deep knowledge of Workday business processes related to compensation, payroll, and HCM-Finance alignment.
- Familiarity with GAAP standards and their application to payroll and benefits accounting.
- Experience supporting reporting and reconciliation efforts related to payroll in Workday and/or external tools like Excel, Tableau, or Power BI.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to work across functional and technical teams.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative cross-functional team.
Preferred Experience
- Workday certifications in Payroll and/or HCM.
- Experience with adaptive planning, costing overrides, or academic appointments in Workday.
- Background in post-go-live support or ERP optimization projects.
