Role Overview
The Client Onboarding Director serves as the owner of Attivo’s client transition experience and the leader of the firm’s client onboarding team. They are responsible for designing, leading, and continuously improving the end-to-end onboarding of new clients—from contract execution through successful transition to steady-state service delivery.
This position blends deep technical accounting expertise, client-facing leadership, team management, and process excellence. The Client Onboarding Director ensures onboarding engagements are delivered with consistency, technical rigor, and a high bar for client experience, while also managing capacity, estimates, and cross-functional alignment with business development and delivery teams.
Responsibilities
Client Onboarding Ownership
- Own the client relationship during onboarding from signed agreement through formal handoff to permanent delivery team
- Lead structured onboarding engagements with clear scope, timelines, roles, and success criteria
- Serve as senior escalation point for onboarding-related issues
- Manage onboarding budget
- Ensure delivery team readiness and accountability before transition to steady state
Client Onboarding Team Leadership
- Lead and develop the Client Onboarding team
- Assign and oversee onboarding resources across engagements
- Train onboarding staff on firm standards and client-specific requirements
- Conduct regular shadowing and quality reviews
- Coach team members and manage performance expectations
Technical Accounting & Risk Oversight
- Review client accounting environments (GL, close, revenue, cash, AR/AP, payroll, equity)
- Identify accounting risks, gaps, and historical issues
- Ensure alignment with GAAP and firm accounting standards
- Apply sound professional judgment in complex or incomplete environments
- Recommend accounting and finance tech stack based on client needs
Scope & Estimation Alignment
- Partner with Business Development to validate onboarding scope and estimates
- Provide feedback to improve pricing, scoping, and service models
Process, Training & Quality
- Own onboarding workflows, playbooks, and documentation standards
- Develop and maintain onboarding training materials
- Ensure consistent execution across all onboarders
- Establish and track onboarding success metrics and feedback loops
Requirements
- Experience onboarding or transitioning clients in an outsourced accounting, advisory, or consulting environment
- Background working with high-growth, multi-entity, or complex operational structures
- Demonstrated experience building or refining onboarding frameworks, documentation standards, or transition processes
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
- Experience managing client relationships at the executive or founder level
- Advanced technical knowledge of:
- GAAP and financial reporting
- Month-end close and operational accounting
- Internal controls, process design, and risk assessment
- Advanced Excel skills
- Experience with accounting and finance systems including:
- QuickBooks Online, Xero, NetSuite
- Bill.com, Gusto, Expensify
- Carta or similar equity platforms
Qualifications
- 8–10+ years of progressive accounting experience (public accounting, advisory, or professional services)
- Senior Accounting Manager level or above; CPA preferred
- Experience in Fintech, SaaS, or professional services environments
- Executive-level client presence with strong judgment in ambiguous situations
- Strong leadership, ownership, and accountability
- Strategic thinker with attention to detail and willingness to execute hands-on
- Proven ability to build trusted relationships with clients and internal leaders
- Proven success with team leadership and management
- Collaborative, cross-functional leader who influences without authority
- Entrepreneurial, process-oriented mindset with a passion for growth-stage companies
Location/Travel
- Remote
- Ability to travel at least twice a year for All-Staff Retreats & Regional Meetups, and as needed for recruiting vendor partnerships and networking opportunities.
Reports To: Head of Client Delivery
Salary Hiring Range: $150,000 - $185,000 depending on experience
Target Annual Bonus: 10% annual target bonus
Position Status: Full-Time, Exempt
