Position Overview

Atwell is seeking an experienced Piping Designer to support our growing Oil & Gas (Hydrocarbons) team, with a focus on midstream pipeline and facility design.

In this role, you will support the design and development of oil and natural gas infrastructure, including compressor stations, pump stations, meter and regulator stations, pipeline interconnects, terminals, and other associated facilities. Additional projects may include CO₂, hydrogen, and renewable natural gas (RNG) infrastructure.

The ideal candidate brings a strong background in 3D piping design, equipment layouts, and construction documentation, with direct experience supporting midstream oil and gas projects. You will work closely with mechanical, process, civil, structural, and electrical engineering teams to develop accurate, constructible designs from initial concepts through issued-for-construction deliverables.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of piping design experience, preferably within the oil and gas midstream sector.
  • Direct experience designing piping systems for midstream facilities such as compressor stations, pump stations, meter stations, terminals, or pipeline interconnect facilities.
  • Proficiency in CADWorx and AutoCAD for 3D piping modeling, equipment layouts, and construction drawing development.
  • Experience with Plant 3D, Navisworks, Inventor, or similar design software is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of piping components, valves, fittings, flanges, pipe supports, and equipment connections.
  • Experience developing piping isometrics, general arrangements, piping plans, sections, and bills of materials.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, process flow diagrams (PFDs), equipment specifications, and engineering design documents.
  • Ability to coordinate design activities across multiple engineering disciplines and manage competing project deadlines.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed 3D piping models and construction drawings for midstream oil and gas pipelines and facilities, primarily utilizing CADWorx and AutoCAD.
  • Design piping arrangements and equipment layouts for compressor stations, pump stations, meter stations, pipeline interconnects, and other midstream facilities.
  • Prepare piping plans, elevations, sections, isometric drawings, general arrangement drawings, and material takeoffs.
  • Translate P&IDs and engineering specifications into accurate piping models and construction-ready deliverables.
  • Coordinate piping designs around compressors, pumps, vessels, separators, filtration equipment, valves, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Incorporate pipe supports, equipment clearances, accessibility, maintenance requirements, and constructability considerations into facility designs.
  • Collaborate with process, mechanical, civil, structural, and electrical/instrumentation engineering teams to identify and resolve design conflicts.
  • Support 3D model reviews, interdisciplinary coordination, and quality control efforts throughout the design process.
  • Incorporate engineering redlines, field measurements, vendor drawings, and client comments into design packages.
  • Prepare and update piping bills of materials, drawing packages, and associated project documentation.
  • Assist with field verification, as-built drawings, and modifications to existing facilities when required.
  • Work with project managers and design leads to meet project schedules, budgets, and technical requirements while maintaining Atwell's quality standards.
