Author’s innovative care model is a virtual-first, technology-enabled mental health solution for serious mental illness (SMI), substance use disorders (SUD) and dementia. At Author, we work as a multidisciplinary team and partner closely with primary care offices, families and caregivers. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for patients by providing community-based wrap-around outpatient mental health care inclusive of psychiatric, psychotherapeutic and care management services and keeping them out of the hospital and the ER. We deliver the majority of our clinical services through our virtual platform, with in-person contact as needed. As part of our growth, we seek a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner to join our collaborative team. This is a fully remote position.

WHAT IS YOUR SUPERPOWER?

  • Provide compassionate, personalized and comprehensive care to older adults with severe mental illness, substance use, and/or dementia
  • Engage with patients in a respectful, sensitive and non-judgemental manner that is appropriate to the patient’s age, physical ability, educational level, and culture, potentially involving the patient’s family members in this process
  • Collaborate professionally with a team-based approach to care, including participating in group huddles and clinical case discussion alongside psychiatrists, psychotherapists, medical assistants and behavioral health care managers
  • Coordinate care with PCPs to support medical health, makes referrals as needed and order appropriate laboratory and imaging workup 
  • Determine when higher levels of care are warranted, manage crisis situations, and help facilitate transitions in care
  • Navigate the electronic medical record efficiently and maintain timely, accurate documentation of clinical encounters
  • Curious and passionate about innovations in healthcare, including interacting with technology and product teams, testing new products and giving feedback on design
  • Flexible with change, able to adjust, pivot and adapt in a startup environment that includes frequent shifts in structure and uncertainty 

 

WHAT WE ARE SEEKING:

  • Board-certified PMHNP with active license and DEA to practice in FL and TX, and willing to obtain additional state license/DEA as needed
  • Dedication to serving an older adult population, aligned with the company mission. Relevant clinical experience with this specific population is preferred
  • 3-5 years working as an NP in acute psychiatric settings, including ER, Urgent Care, Inpatient Units, Intensive Outpatient Programs, ACT teams, Nursing Homes and outpatient mental health clinics managing complex patients with SMI/SUD and dementia
  • Compassionate approach to care, excellent listening skills, empathy and humility, patience with challenging patients including substance abuse and cognitive impairment
  • Strong clinical judgment and psychiatric knowledge base, able to manage crisis situations, engage with families and caregivers. Knowledge of geriatric psychopharmacology, accurate formulation of psychiatric diagnoses, supportive therapeutic interventions
  • Experience working with major medical comorbidities and complex care needs including social determinants of health
  • Team player, hard-working and collaborative, willing to engage in pilot projects, help colleagues when needed, and align with company goals 
  • Demonstrates a high degree of professionalism including timeliness for patient visits and clinical meetings. Returns calls, medication requests and messages promptly
  • Ability to seek out supervision appropriately, receive and integrate feedback, and demonstrate growth through increasing independence
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients, peers and managers
  • Engages with metrics relevant to clinical quality, monitors adherence to company goals and responds to audits, performance reviews, and recommendations
  • Strong computer and software skills, able to navigate technology, utilize virtual interface smoothly, demonstrate fluency with Google suite of applications
  • Comfortable with the startup environment, including flexibility and adaptability to company pivots and changes, importance of pilot programs and iterations on design
  • Previous experience providing virtual care or telehealth services required
  • Experience in managed care models,  collaborative care or value based care preferred
  • Conduct initial evaluations and follow-up visits for patients, make appropriate referrals to psychotherapy and care management, engage in regular weekly supervision with MD to review case list
  • On-Call responsibilities are after-hours by phone for 1 week every 3-4 months or as needed. (This is a light call that averages 0-2 calls/day, rare emergencies)
  • Bilingual Spanish and/or Haitian Creole speaking applicants are highly desirable and strongly encouraged to apply (pay differential is available)
