Risk Manager - Avalanche Foundation

The Avalanche Foundation is seeking a Risk Manager to join its Treasury team and play a critical role in safeguarding the Foundation’s financial and operational integrity. In this role, you will design, implement, and oversee a comprehensive risk management framework that protects the Foundation’s treasury while enabling innovation in the blockchain space.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Risk Management Framework Development

  • Design and implement a comprehensive risk management framework tailored to the unique requirements of web3, blockchain technology, and decentralized finance.
  • Establish clear policies, procedures, and risk guidelines aligned with the Foundation’s mission and regulatory standards.
  • Regularly update and refine the framework to address emerging risks in the blockchain ecosystem, including changes in regulatory landscapes and technological advancements.

Risk Identification and Assessment

  • Conduct thorough assessments of market, protocol, credit, counterparty, operational, liquidity, and regulatory risks impacting the Foundation’s treasury and operations.
  • Develop models and tools to quantify and simulate risk exposures across multiple dimensions, including extreme market conditions and stress scenarios.
  • Continuously monitor industry trends and emerging threats to proactively manage vulnerabilities.

Risk Monitoring and Reporting

  • Utilize advanced technical proficiency to create detailed dashboards and reports which afford actionable insights on risk metrics, highlighting key exposures and trends.
  • Deliver regular updates to senior leadership and stakeholders, translating complex risk data into well-formed and corporate-strategy-aligned recommendations.
  • Ensure the Foundation adheres to all internal and external reporting requirements, maintaining transparency and accountability.

Compliance and Regulatory Oversight

  • Ensure all risk management activities comply with requisite international regulations and standards applicable to blockchain and DeFi.
  • Act as a liaison with legal and compliance teams to address any regulatory deviations, gaps, or enforcement actions.
  • Stay informed regarding global regulatory developments and adapt risk policies to meet evolving compliance requirements.

Treasury Collaboration

  • Partner closely with the Treasury operations team to integrate risk management strategies into liquidity planning, asset allocation, and investment decisions.
  • Provide real-time guidance to optimize risk-adjusted returns while safeguarding the Foundation’s assets.
  • Support strategic initiatives such as staking, yield farming, or token management with comprehensive risk assessments.

Technology and Systems Integration

  • Leverage advanced analytical tools, risk management software, and blockchain-centric technologies to enhance risk monitoring capabilities.
  • Work with developers to integrate risk metrics into decentralized protocols and applications as needed.
  • Ensure robust cybersecurity and data protection measures to mitigate operational risks.

Crisis and Contingency Planning

  • Design and test contingency plans for potential adverse events, including protocol failures, cybersecurity incidents, and extreme market volatility.
  • Lead incident response efforts, ensuring swift mitigation and resolution of crises impacting the Foundation’s operations or reputation.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as a trusted advisor to internal teams, providing expertise on risk-related matters to inform key decisions.
  • Engage with external partners, such as counterparties, exchanges, and custodians, to evaluate and mitigate third-party risks.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related fields. Advanced degrees or certifications (e.g., FRM, CFA) are highly desirable
  • 5-7 years of experience in risk management, preferably in a combination of DeFi and TradFi arenas. Ideal to have exposure within the financial or blockchain industry
  • Strong technical expertise in risk frameworks and analysis tools
  • Excellent communication skills for reporting complex metrics to various stakeholders
  • Able to program in Python and familiarity with SQL highly desirable
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize and multitask in a dynamic environment
  • Must reside in The Cayman Islands or relocate to

Salary Range: $139,353 to $174,191
