Project Leader – Refinery Catalyst Testing

Role description

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Project Leader – Refinery Catalyst Testing to join our Contract R&D team. In this pivotal role, you will design and execute complex catalyst testing projects, ensuring accurate data generation, seamless project delivery, and strong customer engagement.

You will work directly with refinery and catalyst company clients, applying your technical understanding of refinery processes to translate customer needs into robust test programs and actionable insights.

Key Responsibilities

Project Scoping & Design

  • Define project requirements covering safety, equipment configuration, catalyst preparation, testing protocols, and data analysis.
  • Scope projects including cost modelling, planning, and risk assessment to set clear expectations for customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Conduct detailed safety analyses and implement safety measures in alignment with Avantium’s stringent standards.

Project Execution

  • Lead multidisciplinary project teams to deliver full project scope safely, on time, and within budget.
  • Ensure accurate execution of test protocols and high‑quality data reporting aligned with customer requirements and industry best practices.

Customer Interaction & Business Support

  • Maintain strong client relationships, acting as a technical partner to understand industrial refinery processes and testing needs.
  • Prepare compelling technical proposals as part of Lead Development Teams to secure competitive project opportunities.
  • Occasionally publish technical articles or speak at conferences to demonstrate Avantium's strengths.

Required Skills & Experience

Technical Expertise

  • PhD/MSc in Chemical Engineering with strong background on catalysis and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in catalyst testing or a related area. At least 2 years in a project leadership role in a relevant industrial or research organization
  • Strong understanding of refinery processes such as hydrocracking, hydrotreating, and catalytic reforming.
  • Experience designing or operating catalyst testing systems, fixed‑bed reactors, or high‑throughput catalytic setups (preferred).
  • Ability to analyze large datasets and apply quality criteria to ensure repeatability, reproducibility, and scalability of data.
  • Programming and database management capability. JMP/SQL knowledge is plus.
  • Proficiency in project management software and tools.
  • Experience with process or lab automation and equipment building.

Project Leadership

  • Proven experience leading technical projects in an R&D, refinery, or catalysis environment.
  • Strong ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively in a multi‑project environment.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to manage customer expectations and maintain trusted relationships.
  • Ability to work cross‑functionally with scientists, engineers, and commercial teams.
