Engineering Manager
1 big thing: Axios is a respected media company dedicated to providing trustworthy, award-winning news content in an audience-first format known as Smart Brevity™. We’re hiring a remote Engineering Manager focused on Data to lead a team shaping how Axios collects, structures, and activates data across our business.
Why it matters: Data is at the core of Axios’ strategy. Our teams ensure that the data powering our journalism, products, and AI initiatives is clean, reliable, and actionable. From enabling personalization and audience growth to powering editorial tools and AI-driven innovation, we need thoughtful engineering leadership to help Axios use data as a true differentiator.
Responsibilities: In this role, you will make an impact at Axios through the following responsibilities:
- Directly supporting individual engineers through 1:1s, coaching, and feedback.
- Helping cross-functional teams (Product, Data Science, Data Analysts, Editorial, and Engineering) work productively, with effective prioritization and resourcing.
- Driving delivery of clean, reliable data pipelines that directly power personalization, editorial tooling, and AI applications.
- Partnering with product managers and analysts to integrate data into products that help Axios grow audiences and improve user experiences.
- Helping to hire and onboard a diverse team of data engineers, and actively fostering an inclusive environment.
- Creating processes and frameworks that help engineers focus, experiment, and deliver — without feeling impeded.
- Shaping Axios’ data strategy by building scalable platforms while ensuring transparency, documentation, and long-term resilience.
- Helping maintain a culture that balances healthy urgency with the need for downtime and recuperation.
Skills: Ideal candidates will embody an entrepreneurial spirit and passion for Axios’ mission, and preferably have many of the following skills:
- 3–7 years of experience leading engineering teams, with a focus on data engineering or backend systems.
- Strong technical grounding in data platforms, pipelines, and modern cloud technologies.
- Experience building or supporting data systems that integrate into products, personalization, or AI workflows.
- A great understanding of how data systems succeed and fail, and a willingness to experiment with your teams to do more of the former.
- A track record of treating engineers as humans, not fungible resources.
- Excellent listening and communication skills that translate well to a remote work environment.
Starting salary for this role is in the range of $160,000 – $220,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. Because this is a remote-optional job posting, this salary range takes into account all possible locations within the United States, but candidates will only be eligible for the salary range for their location.
