Position Overview
Axle is seeking an experienced Scientific Program Manager with proven expertise in high-containment laboratory operations (BSL-3 and BSL-4 environments) to support financial, operational, and research management. This role involves managing complex resources, ensuring biosafety compliance, and supporting mission-critical research projects that drive innovation in global health and biotechnology.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support initiatives related to biosafety, biosecurity, and regulatory management in high- and maximum-containment (BSL-3/ABSL-3 and BSL-4/ABSL-4) laboratories.
- Collaborate with institutional safety offices, emergency response teams, and security personnel to maintain compliance and ensure safe, continuous operations.
- Provide expert guidance on containment facility operations, policies, and emergency preparedness.
- Assist with managing budget allocations, planning, supplemental reviews, initiatives, program changes, and end-of-year spending.
- Contribute to the development of resource packages for new investigators.
- Support resource management efforts, including personnel, funding, and space allocations.
- Advise leadership on reporting requirements, data calls, and strategic resource planning.
- Offer recommendations for laboratory and research facility operations, including planning and coordinating space for new projects, programs, or renovations.
- Maintain accurate records and databases of laboratory space, usage, and capacity.
- Provide input on policies, technical design, construction, and operational needs for research environments.
- Track and manage renovations, new construction, and facility improvement projects.
- Make informed recommendations to leadership on scientific and logistical requirements for renovation and resource requests.
- Provide support for vaccine development and translational research projects, including production and testing of clinical materials.
- Collaborate with principal investigators and institutional offices on intellectual property, technology transfer, and licensing matters.
- Contribute to strategic planning, assessment of new scientific initiatives, and resource allocation decisions.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in biological sciences, engineering, public health, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
- 2-5+ years of experience supporting operations or safety within a BSL-3 or BSL-4 research environment.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities, with experience working across multidisciplinary teams.
- Proven ability to problem-solve in fast-paced, highly regulated environments, demonstrating adaptability and sound judgment.

This role has a market-competitive salary with an anticipated base compensation range listed below. Actual salaries will vary depending on a candidate’s experience, qualifications, skills, and location.
Salary Range
$110,000 - $125,000 USD
