Engineering Manager, Connected Devices Cloud

Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Join Axon and be a Force for Good.

At Axon, we’re on a mission to Protect Life. We’re explorers, pursuing society’s most critical safety and justice issues with our ecosystem of devices and cloud software. Like our products, we work better together. We connect with candor and care, seeking out diverse perspectives from our customers, communities and each other.

Life at Axon is fast-paced, challenging and meaningful. Here, you’ll take ownership and drive real change. Constantly grow as you work hard for a mission that matters at a company where you matter.

Your impact

The Connected Devices Cloud team builds and operates the cloud services that connect Axon devices — including body-worn cameras, in‑car systems, ALPR, and other wireless peripherals — to Axon’s cloud ecosystem, enabling secure provisioning, real‑time telemetry, streaming, device management, and evidence workflows at global scale.
As an Engineering Manager for Connected Devices Cloud, you will:

  • Lead a high‑impact engineering team building scalable, secure, and highly available services that power mission‑critical public safety workflows for our customers worldwide.
  • Join to drive CD Cloud architecture and operations, raising the bar on reliability, latency, and cost efficiency across our services and APIs.
  • Shape the engineering culture in our Vietnam hub by championing operational excellence, strong engineering practices, and a growth mindset across the team.
  • Partner closely with product management, QA, security, and other device and cloud teams to deliver end‑to‑end solutions that feel seamless to our customers and to the officers who rely on Axon every day.

What You’ll Do

Work Location: This role is based out of our Ho Chi Minh Office and follows a hybrid schedule. We rely on in-person collaboration and ask that team members work onsite Tuesdays through Fridays, with the flexibility to work remotely on Mondays, unless there is an approved workplace accommodation. We believe that connection fuels innovation, and our in-office culture is designed to foster meaningful teamwork, mentorship, and shared success.

Reports To: Senior Engineering Manager / Engineering Director

  • Lead and grow a high‑performing cloud engineering team (roughly 6–10 engineers) building and operating services for Connected Devices Cloud.
  • Hire, onboard, coach, and develop engineers at multiple levels, creating clear growth paths and a culture of continuous learning and feedback.
  • Run effective 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development plans that align individual aspirations with business needs.
  • Foster a healthy, inclusive team environment that values psychological safety, clear communication, and collaboration across geographies and time zones.

Execution & Delivery

  • Own planning and execution for your team’s ZBB initiatives and roadmap deliverables, ensuring predictable delivery with high quality and clear trade‑offs.
  • Collaborate with product managers to clarify requirements, define milestones, manage dependencies, and communicate status and risks to stakeholders.
  • Partner with other EMs and staff engineers to align domain ownership, split complex systems into clear service boundaries, and reduce risky dependencies.

Technical Leadership & Architecture

  • Provide hands‑on technical leadership: review designs, challenge assumptions, and help your team make sound architectural and operational decisions for distributed systems in production.
  • Own and evolve services that support critical device workflows.
  • Champion reliability and resilience: define and track SLOs, drive incident reviews and corrective actions, and reduce blast radius through patterns like rate limiting, graceful degradation, and safe rollout mechanisms.
  • Partner with QA and security to “shift left” on quality and security, ensuring testing, observability, and secure‑by‑default practices are part of the development lifecycle.

Operations & Cloud Excellence

  • Own your team’s on‑call health and operational excellence, ensuring robust runbooks, clear ownership, and effective collaboration with shiproom and support teams during incidents.
  • Drive adoption of shared CD Cloud tooling and standards (e.g., service catalog, change management, feature flags/launch controls, observability dashboards) to make our platform safer and easier to operate at scale.
  • Partner with peers to manage cloud cost efficiency and capacity for CD Cloud services while meeting performance and availability goals.

What You Bring

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 3+ years managing or tech‑leading backend/cloud engineering teams delivering production services.
  • Proven experience building and operating cloud‑based, data‑intensive or high‑availability services (e.g., microservices, event‑driven systems, APIs) on a major public cloud platform (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Strong technical background in at least one modern backend language or stack (Java, Go, Node.js, or similar), with the ability to dive into designs, code, and production issues when needed.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems fundamentals (scalability, consistency, fault tolerance), data storage (SQL/NoSQL), and messaging/streaming technologies.
  • Demonstrated track record of delivering customer‑facing products or platforms in production, balancing new feature delivery with technical debt and operational risk.
  • Experience hiring, mentoring, and managing out engineers; comfortable giving direct, candid feedback while maintaining trust and respect.
  • Effective communication skills in English, with experience collaborating across multiple international offices and time zones.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in connected devices / IoT / real‑time systems, such as device provisioning, secure communication, or telemetry pipelines between devices and cloud.
  • Familiarity with observability tooling (metrics, logging, tracing) and SRE practices (SLOs, error budgets, incident management).
  • Experience in regulated or safety‑critical domains (e.g., public safety, healthcare, fintech) where reliability, auditability, and data protection are paramount.
  • Prior experience working in or with multi‑pillar or multi‑site organizations (e.g., collaborating with hardware, firmware, apps, and other cloud teams) on complex, cross‑functional initiatives.
  • Passion for mentoring diverse talent and building an inclusive, feedback‑driven engineering culture.
