Software Engineer II
Join Axon and be a Force for Good.
At Axon, we’re on a mission to Protect Life. We’re explorers, pursuing society’s most critical safety and justice issues with our ecosystem of devices and cloud software. Like our products, we work better together. We connect with candor and care, seeking out diverse perspectives from our customers, communities and each other.
Life at Axon is fast-paced, challenging and meaningful. Here, you’ll take ownership and drive real change. Constantly grow as you work hard for a mission that matters at a company where you matter.
Your Impact
You'll contribute to the backend services that power Dedrone's counter-UAS platform—implementing complex features across sensor ingestion, track correlation, alerting, and API delivery for operators in mission-critical environments.
As a software engineer on the team, you will work closely with senior engineers on architecture decisions that shape this product. You have experience building cloud services that require high availability and fast, consistent performance. You enjoy working with modern open source technologies and can apply solid engineering fundamentals to build systems that are resilient, responsive, and accurate.
Join us to help protect the world's most critical airspace — and the people who depend on it.
Location - This role is based out of our Sterling, VA office and follows a hybrid schedule. We rely on in-person collaboration to build real physical products. We ask that team members work onsite Tuesdays through Fridays, with the flexibility to work remotely on Mondays, unless there is an approved workplace accommodation. We believe that connection fuels innovation, and our in-office culture is designed to foster meaningful teamwork, mentorship, and shared success.
What You’ll Do
- Implement complex features and create new APIs and components to improve airspace awareness, drone detection, and mitigation
- Own feature delivery end-to-end with Product and Design, from requirements through deployment
- Identify and fix non-trivial bugs including race conditions, integration issues, and edge cases
- Contribute to code reviews and design reviews; point out quality issues and help maintain engineering standards
- Build and maintain services with clear SLOs (latency, availability) owned by the team
- Influence peers through technical discussions and code reviews; coach junior engineers or interns
- Strengthen observability (metrics/logs/traces) and participate in on-call/incident response
- Collaborate with adjacent engineering teams and contribute to Dedrone engineering practices
- Integrate and help build real physical products from sensors and cameras to edge compute devices
What You Bring
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Engineering, OR graduate of coding boot camp, OR 3+ years of relevant experience
- 3+ years of professional software development experience
- Experience implementing and maintaining highly-available, scalable cloud-based systems
- Experience in languages such as Java, Scala, Go, C#, or similar
- Demonstrated ability to make tough technical decisions based on requirements, constraints, and trade-offs
- Experience working with cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, or Azure is a plus
- Strong Linux/Unix experience is a plus
- Working with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) is a plus
- You care about end-user experience and seek out hard problems
