Imaging Software Engineer II

Tampere, Pirkanmaa, Finland

Join Axon and be a Force for Good.

At Axon, we’re on a mission to Protect Life. We’re explorers, pursuing society’s most critical safety and justice issues with our ecosystem of devices and cloud software. Like our products, we work better together. We connect with candor and care, seeking out diverse perspectives from our customers, communities and each other.

Life at Axon is fast-paced, challenging and meaningful. Here, you’ll take ownership and drive real change. Constantly grow as you work hard for a mission that matters at a company where you matter.

Do you want to make camera tuning faster, more measurable, and more repeatable? We are looking for an experienced imaging engineer to help us automate and scale image-quality tuning and testing across our camera products. This role sits at the intersection of subjective image quality, objective lab measurement, sensor / ISP behavior, 3A tuning, test automation and practical software tooling.

You will work hands-on with real camera systems, lab measurements, test setups, tuning assets, image datasets, and product constraints. The goal is to use automation and practical tools to accelerate product tuning and testing, improve repeatability, and help our team deliver high-quality cameras faster.

This role is ideal for someone who has tuned or evaluated real camera products, understands both subjective and objective image quality, and is motivated to turn that expertise into scalable tools and workflows.

Work Location: This role is based out of our Tampere office and follows a hybrid schedule. We rely on in-person collaboration and ask that team members work onsite Tuesdays through Fridays, with the flexibility to work remotely on Mondays, unless there is an approved workplace accommodation. We believe that connection fuels innovation, and our in-office culture is designed to foster meaningful teamwork, mentorship, and shared success.
Reports to: Senior Technical Director

What you’ll do

  • Drive automation of the image-quality tuning workflow: capture, measurement, analysis, tuning iteration, regression testing, and reporting.
  • Work with product image-quality targets across real-world and lab scenes, lighting conditions, motion, dynamic range, color, noise, sharpness, exposure, and white balance.
  • Partner with software, hardware, firmware, algorithm, and test engineers to connect lab results and product feedback to tuning and validation workflows.
  • Improve how the team captures, stores, compares, and reviews image-quality evidence across products and camera modules.
  • Help translate subjective image-quality expectations into objective metrics, lab measurements, acceptance criteria, and repeatable regression gates.
  • Build tools that use automation, optimization, and AI-assisted analysis to suggest tuning directions, detect regressions, triage failures, and reduce manual iteration.

What you bring

  • Hands-on experience with image quality in real camera products, ideally including ISP tuning, 3A tuning, image quality validation, camera module characterization, or product tuning.
  • Experience with image-quality lab workflows, test charts, lighting setups, scene selection, regression testing, and the practical limitations of image-quality measurements.
  • Practical software and tooling skills, especially Python for analysis, automation, scripting, data processing, or lab tooling.
  • Working understanding of the camera pipeline from sensor through ISP, 3A, image processing, compression, and final output.
  • A hands-on debugging mindset: comfortable moving between lab images, logs, tuning files, device behavior, and software tools.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both imaging domain experts and software engineers.

Beneficial Experience

  • Experience with Qualcomm or similar mobile / embedded camera platforms, ISP tuning tools, Chromatix-like tuning assets, or vendor ISP workflows.
  • Experience with Imatest, color science tools, lab automation, camera characterization, or image-quality databases.
  • Exposure to AI-assisted optimization, Bayesian optimization, ML-based image analysis, LLM-assisted tooling, or automated parameter search.
  • C/C++ experience in image processing or embedded camera software.
  • Experience with image-processing algorithms such as denoising, sharpening, HDR, demosaicing, tone mapping, multi-frame fusion, or stabilization.
  • Any background in photography, cinematography, colour grading and related areas are useful.
  • Experience building dashboards, regression infrastructure, or automated test systems.

Don’t meet every single requirement? That's ok. At Axon, we Aim Far. We think big with a long-term view because we want to reinvent the world to be a safer, better place. We are also committed to building diverse teams that reflect the communities we serve.
