Senior Director of Government & Regulatory Affairs

As a leader in our industry, we have over 22 GW of utility-scale energy storage and hybrid renewable energy projects in development and 33 projects in operation or construction across North America. 

We are seeking a strategic and experienced Senior Director of Government & Regulatory Affairs to lead state and local engagement across key Midwest and Eastern markets, ensuring our portfolio of 

energy storage and hybrid renewable projects through evolving political, policy, and regulatory environments. The Senior Director will work cross-functionally with Aypa’s Development, Commercial, Transmission, Asset Management and Legal teams and serve as the company’s primary point of contact with trade associations, state legislatures, public utility commissions, governors’ offices, municipal councils, and permitting authorities within designated jurisdictions.  

The ideal candidate is a proactive, solutions-driven leader with a proven track record of navigating complex political and regulatory environments across all levels of government. They bring deep experience advancing utility-scale energy infrastructure in close coordination with state and local officials. This role reports to Aypa’s Senior Vice President of Government & Corporate Affairs.  

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Lead and execute Aypa’s state and local government affairs strategy with a focus on the Midwest and Eastern markets;
  • Build and manage relationships with key government stakeholders, including legislators, governors’ offices, mayors, regulators, and local permitting officials;
  • Advocate for pro-storage and pro-renewables policies, including permitting reform, tax policy, and storage eligibility in capacity and IRP frameworks;
  • Monitor and influence legislative and regulatory proceedings impacting energy storage and project siting;
  • Partner with internal teams to ensure government and regulatory affairs strategies support project milestones, permitting, and risk mitigation;
  • Develop coalitions with trade associations, community groups, labor unions and economic development organizations to build project support;
  • Manage consultants, lobbyists, and local government affairs contractors;
  • Represent Aypa in public hearings, legislative meetings, and regulatory workshops.  


Key Qualifications: 

  • 10+ years of experience in government affairs, regulatory policy, or public affairs, with a focus on energy, infrastructure, or related sectors; 
  • Demonstrated success advancing storage or renewables projects or policies at the local level; 
  • Deep familiarity with public utility commission processes, local permitting regimes, and legislative dynamics; 
  • Strong political acumen, negotiation skills, and ability to navigate sensitive stakeholder environments; 
  • Experience working across multiple states or regions, especially in markets with high load growth or storage/renewable targets; 
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to distill complex regulatory information into clear, concise analysis; 
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills, with the flexibility and creativity to excel in a fast-paced, high-growth environment; 
  • Ability to travel up to 50% as needed; 
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in public policy, law or related field preferred.  


Compensation and Location: 

Job Type: Permanent, Full-time.
Salary: A base salary commensurate with experience.
Bonus: An annual bonus will be awarded based on both individual performance, as well as the overall success of the business.

Location: Ability to work in the United States is a requirement. Preference for candidates based in the Midwest or East; however, location of workplace is flexible provided candidate is able to travel as required.
Travel: Up to 50%.
