What the Role Is

Babylist is looking for a highly experienced and strategic Director of BI & Data Engineering to lead our self-service (strategy) & data platform. This team is responsible for smooth data operations and delivering data to our business teams, analysts, and scientists. Our data platform is actively used by more than 60% of the Babylist team (~200 people), and is used across our Registry (Core Product), Shop, Health, Partnership, Marketing and Fulfillment Operations business areas. Working closely with embedded Data Analysts you make sure they have all the data to support their business areas. Together with other data leaders, you plan and execute key initiatives. Long term, you set the vision for how we evolve our technology stack to deliver a world-class data platform and self-service experience. You will report directly to the Head of Data and lead a team of 6 incredibly talented Analytics Engineers (3) and Data Engineers (3).

  • Willing to roll up your sleeves and go deep on project scoping and major architecture decisions
  • Excellent with written and verbal communication.  You can easily extend this beyond just Data and Engineering
  • 10+ years of experience building data in roles of increasing responsibility and technical capability
  • 3+ years of experience managing a team of 3 or more analytics and data engineers
  • (Bonus) Experience driving cost optimization initiatives in cloud-based data platforms, including warehouse efficiency, query optimization, and storage strategy 
  • (Bonus) Knowledge of event-driven architectures and tools such as Kafka or AWS SNS/SQS for building scalable, real-time data pipelines.
  • (Bonus) Experience with data cataloging and metadata management tools, such as Atlan, Alation, or similar platforms, to drive discoverability, community, and governance of data assets

  • Own the vision, strategy, and delivery of our self-service capabilities. Ensure a world-class experience through training, well-designed and documented data models, successful data operations, data quality, and platform stability
  • Define and scale development, quality, and governance standards for Sigma; leading the adoption of advanced features and workflows to maximize efficiency and cross-team alignment
  • Guide the technical direction for the entire data platform and work with the data leadership to influence major technical decisions that affect the entire company
  • Anticipate strategic and scaling-related challenges via intentional long-term planning
  • Partner with executives and cross-functional leaders (Finance, Product, Marketing, Operations) to translate business strategy into a cohesive data strategy, ensuring aligned metrics and actionable insights across the company.
  • Own vendor evaluation and partnership strategy, staying ahead of trends in BI, data engineering, and AI to bring the right tools and innovations into the organization
  • Own and evolve the data team's development process to optimize for innovation, speed of delivery, and data maturity
  • Set the technical standards and frameworks of scalable SQL transformations, frameworks, and governance practices to support data pipelines and models across the organization
  • Drive thought leadership to define the team’s dbt strategy through innovations like centralized metric definitions, CI testing frameworks, and organization-wide alignment of data models
  • Drive innovation in analytics and experimentation, identifying opportunities for advanced methodologies and creating frameworks to scale these efforts across the organization
  • Create a culture of inclusiveness, kindness, creativity, and impact

Babylist follows a market-based approach to compensation, with pay varying based on location, experience, and qualifications. In compliance with applicable pay transparency laws, the starting salary range for this role is CAD $268,500.00 to $335,500.00, representing the lowest to highest compensation we reasonably expect to offer for this position.

Your starting salary within this range will be determined based on your skills, experience, and work location, with future adjustments informed by role growth, performance, and internal pay equity. Babylist is committed to supporting career progression and recognizes the value of performance-based advancement
