Data Science Temp Contractor - Anomaly Detection

Remote - Argentina; Remote - Colombia ; Remote - Costa Rica ; Remote - Mexico; Remote - US

Backblaze is the object storage leader in the open cloud movement, fueling customer success with cloud storage built purposefully to unlock budgets, unburden administrators, and unleash innovators. Together with our partners, we’re helping customers break free from the restrictive, overpriced legacy solutions that hold them back, and blaze forward with the full power of the open cloud in their hands.

Founded in 2007, we scaled the business with less than $3 million in outside funding until 2021, when we did a traditional IPO on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Today, Backblaze generates over $100m in revenue and is the leading specialized storage cloud - managing over three billion gigabytes of data storage for 500K+ customers in 175+ countries, including businesses, developers, IT professionals, and individuals.

But while there is a lot to celebrate in our past, there is almost as much opportunity ahead of us. We're looking for a Data Science Intern to join us!

What you'll be doing:

As a Data Science Intern, you will focus on analyzing log data, building, evaluating, and improving anomaly detection models. You will:

  • Work with Python-based notebooks (Jupyter, Google Colab, Snowflake Notebooks) to analyze data.
  • Leverage unsupervised machine learning techniques for anomaly detection.
  • Investigate and implement hybrid anomaly detection methods to improve accuracy.
  • Explore, preprocess, and interpret log data to identify meaningful patterns and anomalies.
  • Prepare prediction outputs for integration and use in applications and alerting systems.
  • Present insights clearly to your team, helping drive decisions on security, reliability, and system performance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with Python and data science libraries (e.g., pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn).
  • Familiarity with notebooks (e.g., Jupyter, Google Colab, Snowflake).
  • Knowledge of unsupervised learning methods for anomaly detection (e.g., Isolation Forest, Autoencoders, clustering algorithms).
  • Experience or interest in working with log data, large datasets, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Matplotlib, Plotly, Seaborn).
  • Curiosity and willingness to learn new technologies and adapt to fast-changing environments.
