Internal Applications Engineer

Raleigh, NC

Who We Are:

At Bandwidth, we shape how the world connects. We're the global communications software company and Tier 1 network operator with global reach.  The voice, messaging, and emergency services infrastructure behind the brands and apps you use every day.

Because we own the network we build on, the problems you'll solve here are bigger, more complex, and more impactful. And as communications shifts to AI, we're the infrastructure layer making it possible.

We call ourselves BANDmates because building something this big takes collaboration, different perspectives, and the freedom to bring your authentic self to the table.

We're experts who speak like humans. Ready to build what's next? #JoinTheBand

What We Are Looking For:

We are seeking an innovative and AI-savvy Internal Applications Engineer to help build and maintain the systems that keep Bandwidth's operations running efficiently. You will design, develop, and deploy automation workflows, API integrations, and AI-powered internal tools, working alongside senior engineers to ship real solutions into production. In this role, you will work across the full spectrum of the team's stack, from workflow automation and system integrations to data pipelines and user-facing applications.

What You'll Do:

  • Analyze and automate: Identify opportunities for automation within existing processes, leveraging generative AI, workflow orchestration platforms, and conventional software development to design and implement intelligent solutions that reduce manual effort and improve accuracy.
  • Build internal tooling: Develop and maintain user-facing applications for internal teams using React and FastAPI, deployed on the team's container-based infrastructure, prioritizing reliable behavior and a clean user experience.
  • Integrate systems: Configure and maintain integrations between Bandwidth's operational platforms (HubSpot, ServiceNow, and others) using n8n, Windmill, and Python scripts, handling authentication, data transformation, and webhook flows to keep business workflows connected.
  • Support data pipelines: Assist in building and maintaining workflows that land data from operational systems into Snowflake, ensuring reliable data flow for downstream use.
  • Harness the power of AI: Utilize AI platforms and LLM APIs (Anthropic, OpenAI, and others) to develop AI-powered solutions that generate insights, automate responses, and enhance decision-making, using AI-assisted development tools like Claude Code as a core part of your daily workflow.
  • Develop custom scripts and workflows: Write scripts in Python and JavaScript to automate repetitive tasks, integrate APIs, and extend automation capabilities across the team's stack.
  • Test and iterate: Thoroughly test developed solutions, gather user feedback, and continuously refine and improve implementations based on real-world usage.
  • Collaborate and communicate: Work closely with stakeholders across different departments to gather requirements, present solutions, and ensure successful adoption of new tools and automations.
  • Document and share knowledge: Maintain clear and comprehensive documentation of developed solutions, workflows, and best practices to facilitate knowledge sharing and ongoing maintenance.
  • Data security and privacy: Ensure compliance with data security and privacy regulations when handling sensitive information within automated processes.
  • Assist the IT department in troubleshooting and resolving software issues.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to other team members.

What You Need:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Experience:

  • Python and/or JavaScript in a production or project context.
  • REST API integration, any platforms or languages.
  • Familiarity with workflow automation platforms (e.g., n8n, Windmill, UI Bakery) helpful for maintaining existing systems.
  • Experience with AI development tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar) as a regular part of development workflow.
  • Familiarity with automated testing frameworks (e.g., Pytest, Vitest) and a habit of writing tests alongside code rather than after the fact.
  • Exposure to containerization (Docker) or cloud platforms (AWS).

Technical Skills:

  • Familiarity with software development fundamentals, functions, data structures, control flow, and how to write readable, maintainable code.
  • Ability to read and interpret API documentation, error messages, and logs to diagnose issues independently.
  • Understanding of authentication patterns (API keys, OAuth, tokens) and when to use them.
  • Basic understanding of containerization concepts and cloud deployment (how apps are built, packaged, and run).
  • Experience with data formats (JSON), webhooks, and event-driven patterns.
  • Familiarity with LLM APIs and AI-assisted development tools as practical engineering instruments.
  • Understanding of data security and privacy best practices.

Soft Skills:

  • Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with technical and non-technical teams.
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies and platforms.
  • Strong passion for automation and leveraging AI to enhance productivity.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality solutions.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-moving environment where requirements evolve.

Bonus Points:

  • Demonstrated ability to write working code in Python or a similar language and debug problems independently.
  • Comfort with REST APIs, reading documentation, testing endpoints, handling authentication and errors.
  • Familiarity with version control (Git) and a habit of committing and reviewing work incrementally.
  • Clear written communication, able to document what you built, why, and how to operate it.
  • Curiosity and persistence: you follow a problem until you understand it, not just until it's working.
