Markets Engineering Intern
Our mission at Base is to fix the power grid and enable affordable and reliable electricity for all. To do that, we are building America’s Next-Generation Power Company; the first engineering-led, technology-focused, R&D-driven electricity company. We are a team of tenacious engineers, operators, and creatives who have solved hard problems and are here to do it again.
Base is looking for a highly motivated, intellectually curious, mission-driven software engineer to join our markets team. During your internship you’ll be tasked with important problems for the business and expected to deliver just like any other full-time member of the team.
Internship areas (please indicate all areas you are interested in):
Algorithms and Optimization: At Base, we operate a fleet of distributed energy resources that interacts with the Texas electricity market. We are looking for an intern to assist with the design and implementation of sequential decision algorithms for trading energy and ancillary services. Responsibilities will include:
- Developing decision algorithms for trading a fleet of energy storage resources in ERCOT.
- Validating physics and economics models used for testing algorithms in a simulation environment.
- Implementing and deploying new algorithms to the production stack.
Risk and Trading: At Base, we also enter into financial contracts designed to hedge against the risk imposed by volatile electricity markets. We are looking for an intern to assist with identifying and evaluating new financial products. Responsibilities will include:
- Quantifying long-term financial risk under various operating paradigms.
- Identifying and evaluating new products and contracts.
- Developing software to automate the valuation and execution of new contracts.
Preferred Skills / Qualifications:
- First-principles thinking.
- Expertise in optimization techniques and sequential decision-making algorithms.
- Proficiency in statistics, machine learning and data-driven decision-making processes.
- Experience with test-driven software engineering and CICD methods.
- Strong proficiency in Python and SQL.
- Proven ability to build scalable systems and write clean, maintainable code.
- Knowledge of energy markets or experience with energy systems.
- Wholesale power, commodities, or financial (equities, derivatives) trading experience.
If you’re passionate about tackling one of the most critical challenges of our time, now is the time to join us. Together, we can usher in a new era of American energy abundance by developing the hardware, software, and deployment operations that make it possible.
