Job Description

We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Engineering Productivity (EngProd) & Cloud Infrastructure team — the platform team whose customers are every other engineer at Baton, and the team responsible for our cloud infrastructure, security, and networking partnership with Ryder. You'll own the people, roadmap, and execution of EngProd as we scale from a small, scrappy infrastructure pod into the durable engineering-leverage function that powers a 50+ person engineering organization and Ryder's broader technology investments.

This role is equal parts people leader, technical strategist, and cross-functional operator. You'll coach and grow a tight-knit team of engineers, define and own a 12–18 month roadmap that compounds across every other pod (DaPla, ML, ProPla, Radius, CVIZ), and be the voice of Engineering productivity in baton engineering and cross-org planning. You'll inherit a real engineering function with momentum — and the opportunity to define what "world-class engineering productivity" looks like at the intersection of a fast-moving startup and a Fortune 500 company.

This is ideal for an experienced engineering leader who has come up through infrastructure / platform / devex / SRE, who genuinely loves building teams, and who is energized by making other engineers dramatically more effective.

Responsibilities

  • People Leadership & Team Development:
    • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of high performing engineers.
    • Run performance reviews, calibration, career-path conversations, and PD chats. Set and hold a high bar.
    • Own hiring for the pod — partner with recruiting on sourcing, calibration, and closing top devops / platform / infra talent.
    • Build a culture of ownership, customer-empathy (engineering is your customer), and continuous improvement.
  • Roadmap & Strategy:
    • Own the EngProd 12–18 month roadmap. Translate company-level OKRs into a prioritized backlog of investments.
    • Build a structured intake and prioritization process across pods, treating other engineering teams as customers with real needs and real tradeoffs.
    • Drive Engineering-as-a-Product thinking — every initiative should have a clear customer (another pod), a measurable outcome, and a leverage story that compounds across multiple pods.
    • Champion paved-road tooling and self-service over bespoke, one-off solutions — make the right way the easy way.
    • Champion measurement: stand up the Engineering Excellence KPIs, dashboards, and metrics that let Baton manage what it cares about (CI duration, deploy frequency, MTTR, cost per service, etc.).
  • Execution & Cross-Org Communication:
    • Run sprint planning, project planning, and milestone tracking. Maintain a healthy roadmap and risk register.
    • Represent EngProd in EngStaff and cross-pod syncs. Communicate status, risks, and tradeoffs to executive stakeholders with clarity and confidence.
    • Partner with TPMs and peer engineering managers (DaPla, ML, ProPla, Radius, CVIZ) to negotiate scope, unblock dependencies, and deliver value.
  • Technical Leadership:
    • Drive and review engineering specs. Weigh in on architectural decisions for CI/CD, testing infrastructure, observability, cloud infra, IaC, secrets/IAM, and developer tooling.
    • Own Ryder relationships for cloud infrastructure, security, and networking — navigating enterprise constraints while preserving startup velocity.
    • Partner with the Technical Support organization on issues and escalations
    • Stay technically credible enough to lead — without becoming the bottleneck. Empower senior engineers to own their domains.
    • Partner with our other Platform pods to ensure EngProd investments compound across the broader Baton platform.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 8+ years of engineering experience, including 4+ years directly managing software / infra / devops / SRE engineers.
  • Track record managing teams of 2–8 direct reports, including hiring, growing, and developing technical talent.
  • Has owned a multi-quarter technical roadmap for an infrastructure, platform, devex, or SRE function in a high-growth environment.
  • Strong technical foundation: cloud infrastructure (AWS), Kubernetes, CI/CD, observability tooling (Grafana / Prometheus / Sentry / DataDog), Python, and Infrastructure-as-Code (Pulumi / Terraform), Enterprise security experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team that delivers reliably across quarters, with predictable velocity and clear stakeholder communication.
  • Comfortable communicating technical strategy and tradeoffs to executive stakeholders.
  • Experience operating in B2B SaaS or enterprise environments where reliability, scale, and customer SLAs matter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background scaling EngProd / Developer Experience / Platform / SRE functions from small-but-scrappy to a durable, high leverage engineering org.
  • Experience working inside a startup-within-an-enterprise (e.g. an acquired startup operating inside a Fortune 500).
  • Experience in logistics, supply chain, or freight technology.
  • Background in test infrastructure, deployment automation, or production reliability initiatives that measurably improved org-wide engineering velocity.
  • Familiarity with Baton's tech stack: Python, FastAPI, GraphQL, Flink, Materialize, Debezium, Kafka, Pulumi, GitHub Actions.

The Perks

  • Competitive Base Salary + Cash Bonus Structure
  • Annual Company Bonus + Long Term Incentive Plan
  • 401k with Matching
  • Hybrid Work Schedule
  • Hyper-Stable, publicly traded Enterprise
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Health Coverage
  • Employee Stock Purchase Program (15% discount to market value)
  • Collaborative, Fun, and Tech Forward office in Hayes Valley, San Francisco, CA

Compensation Range: The annual base salary range for this position is $250,000 - $300,000. Compensation will vary based on factors including skill level, proficiencies, transferable knowledge, and experience. In addition to base salary, Baton's full-time employees are eligible for an annual performance bonus.

Why You Should Join

  • Have an immediate impact:
    • With Ryder’s existing customer base of 50,000+ companies and an internal headcount of 43,000, the scale and impact of our products will be large and far-reaching, from day one.
  • Opportunity to grow and lead in a Fortune 500 company:
    • You’ll get to work in a rapidly growing, startup-like environment while having the stability and backing of Ryder and its full executive team.
  • Creative, fast-paced environment to solve impactful problems in Supply Chain:
    • We’re going to design completely new tools for an industry that hasn’t been rethought in decades. And to do this, we need people who think differently.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
