About BEAM

Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics (BEAM) creates pathways for students from low-income, low-access backgrounds to become scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and computer scientists.

We provide BEAM students the same access to high-quality preparation in STEM as their more affluent peers, and we invest deeply in our students' success, with programming from middle school through college graduation focused on joyous, exciting, and rigorous mathematics, building vibrant communities, and supporting students in key life transitions such as college admissions and financial aid.

BEAM has grown from a small summer program serving 17 students in the summer of 2011 to a year-round, national program, serving 450+ students at six summer program sites and 600+ students in year-round programming in New York City and Los Angeles this school year. In addition, our BEAM National pilot program now reaches around 1000 elementary-aged students in seven different states, working to create a new nationwide pathway modeled on our local work. We've seen our students' successes first-hand, and it's backed by data: a quasi-experimental study found that students who attended our 7th grade summer program were 1.3X as likely to declare a STEM major as a matched comparison group.

ABOUT THE NEW YORK PROGRAM

BEAM New York serves students citywide, with concentrations of students in Central Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Upper Manhattan. The program serves up to 720 students in the BEAM Pathway Program who receive ongoing support during the school year, which includes individual academic advising, tutoring, and additional advanced math enrichment. The New York Program team includes 8 full-time staff, 110 seasonal employees. 

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Programs, New York is responsible for all programmatic, financial, and administrative aspects of BEAM’s New York-based program. Reporting to the Chief Programs Officer, this role is accountable for program implementation, oversight, and improvement, which includes collaborating with the other program departments (Summer Programs Management, College Success, Data & Operations, and Curriculum & Design) to lead initiatives at a local level that improve outcomes for program students and alumni.

The Director’s primary focus is aligning the local program with BEAM’s strategy and goals. This involves analyzing the program from a broad, high-level perspective while delegating day-to-day program activities to managers. A key job responsibility is to ensure that all of the New York program’s managers and staff are effectively working toward achieving program goals so that the program remains on schedule, on budget, and ultimately on an upward trajectory of growth and success. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Staff Management (40%)

  • Set SMART program goals to deliver an impactful, high quality program that meets the needs of the community
  • Ensure the program has fidelity to BEAM's model and processes
  • Promote a nurturing and positive work environment to foster respectful working relationships among staff and students.
  • Assign staff responsibilities, develop workflows, and supervise the execution of all required program projects and tasks as needed.
  • Assist program managers through effective communication and collaboration, coordinating people, resources, and tools to help them overcome barriers to success.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to recruit, hire, train, and supervise staff, setting priorities, guiding and keeping staff accountable for their job performance.
  • Cultivate staff career development to meet the program's needs including short/long term goals.
  • Engage in effective collaboration cross departmentally with Advancement, Business Operations, Central Program, and Los Angeles programs teams.

Program Management and Compliance (35%)

  • In collaboration with Central Program teams, lead initiatives at a local level that improve outcomes for the program’s students and alumni.
  • Contribute toward the design, implementation, and evaluation of new policies, procedures, and resources as needed.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with schools, donors and corporate partners and other local stakeholders within the community to further collaborative initiatives with the organization.
  • Monitor the overall successes of program and program participants through the organization’s database and case management system.
  • Manage team’s compliance with central office program requirements and policies, including but not limited to program module implementation, temp staff evaluations, data collection and reporting. 
  • Oversee programs admission and registration processes, including school partner relationship management, student application processing, planning recruiting events
  • Ensure health and safety requirements are being met in all program delivery. 
  • Oversee local summer program management, with a focus on: 
    • Ensuring admissions and registration processes yield a fully enrolled program,
    • Ensuring the programs operate with fidelity to the established model while also supporting, generating, sharing, and documenting ideas for iterative improvement,  
    • Coaching site directors on effective leadership
    • Implementing and refining crisis management plans
    • Guiding local summer planning teams through continuous improvement cycles

Fundraising (15%)

  • Represent BEAM at the local level to promote BEAM’s mission and work; to connect with peers, potential volunteer leaders and funders, media, and other partners; and to open doors to funding opportunities.
  • In close partnership with the Chief Advancement Officer, manage the Local Board. 
  • Support the local planning and execution of recurring fundraising events (including, but not limited to securing venue, food, equipment, and student involvement); lead the event (day/night of)*.
  • Assist with the cultivation and stewardship of donor/funder relationships by attending donor/funder meetings when requested, and serve as primary contact/Primary Solicitor when appropriate*
  • In collaboration with Advancement, responsible for all aspects of scheduled donor/funder site visits.
  • Collaborate with the Advancement team to identify new prospects/funding opportunities (individual, corporate, foundations, government, etc.). 
  • Support the development of high-quality metrics and evaluation by ensuring data collection and entry is happening as planned.
  • Place high priority on meeting the goals and outcomes reported to funders; provide information about barriers to meeting these goals and outcomes to benefit both Advancement and program design/support.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Institutional Giving to prepare  funding applications, renewals, and progress reports.

Financial Oversight (10%)

  • Responsible for the fiscal management of NY Programs, which includes operating within the constraints of the annual budget, while also taking proactive steps to improve operational efficiency and program scalability.
  • Authorizes expenditures within budgetary guidelines in order to meet planned goals for NY Programs.
  • Reviews monthly/quarterly spending reports versus budget; adjusts spending plans as needed to meet financial goals.
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual budget and any long term forecasts by providing input on program plans, staffing needs, and other local organization priorities.

  • Experience with math enrichment and/or out-of-school time education
  • Experience hiring, managing, and evaluating part-time or volunteer program staff
  • Experience working directly with students as either a teacher, mentor, or coach
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM major
  • Fluency in any of the languages spoken by families in our community, including Spanish, Tagalog, and Korean

Our process, as described below, has approximately four stages and we anticipate the process lasting about 4-6 weeks in total with someone starting in the role as soon as possible, although we are flexible with the specific date.

SALARY, BENEFITS, AND OTHER DETAILS

The salary range for this position is $102,960 - $141,570. This is a good faith anticipated range of the job, but the actual pay will be based on any applicant’s skill and experience. 

Work Schedule

Monday-Friday, 10am to 6:00 pm (flexible)
