Legal Counsel (part-time)
Hours: ~20 hours across 5 days
Beauhurst is seeking an experienced Legal Counsel to take full ownership of legal oversight and risk management across the business. This is a newly created role with a wide-ranging remit — from data protection and commercial contracts to employment documentation, intellectual property, and governance. No two days will be the same: one moment you’ll be steering complex negotiations with clients, the next advising the product team on new features, or ensuring our policies keep pace with legislative changes.
You will be a trusted advisor to senior leadership and the commercial team — turning legal complexity into clear, practical guidance and helping colleagues navigate high-stakes or sensitive situations. The role is about more than maintaining compliance; it’s about making well-judged, pragmatic decisions that keep the company moving quickly and confidently.
About Beauhurst
We are building the leading provider of private company data in Europe.
Private companies represent 80% of private sector employment and over 90% of revenues across Europe. They are the backbone of our economy – creating jobs, driving innovation, and generating the tax receipts that enable government services. Yet finding, collecting, and understanding information about private companies remains a significant challenge.
We bridge this gap by providing our customers with comprehensive, up-to-date private company information. Our online platforms and API help our clients to discover, track and understand these companies. This empowers them to take informed action, whether they're offering services or funding to help companies grow, crafting supportive policies, or making better decisions through deeper understanding of the economic landscape.
We work with venture capital firms, big financial institutions, leading universities and the Government to help them find and work with companies that drive disruption and innovation across the economy.
The Role
This is a part-time position (approximately 20 hours across 5 days) designed for someone who thrives on autonomy and variety. You’ll work across all parts of the business, particularly with the commercial and operations teams, to ensure our legal framework supports rather than slows progress. You’ll be responsible for keeping documentation, policies, and practices both compliant and fit for purpose — and for applying your expertise to balance legal risk with the pace of a fast-growing technology and data company.
The role requires presence in our Brixton office at least two days per week, with flexibility to work remotely for the remainder of the time.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Legal & Regulatory Compliance: Ensure company-wide compliance with GDPR and data protection regulations. Stay up to date with legal and regulatory changes, updating internal policies and documentation as needed.
- Commercial & Contractual Support: Review, negotiate and manage commercial contracts, terms, and supporting documentation. Advise the commercial team in plain English, helping colleagues navigate legal issues and client negotiations efficiently.
- Internal Legal Advisory: Respond to day-to-day legal queries across departments, including company structure, IP, statutory matters and regulatory compliance. Stay close to product development, advising on legal implications of planned releases.
- Employment & Governance: Draft and maintain employment contracts and the staff handbook. Advise on employment-related legal matters and help maintain appropriate insurance and governance documentation.
- Risk & Policy Management: Manage GDPR logs, privacy notices, trademarks, and other IP protections. Oversee legal comms and own documentation related to leases, deposits, and any other legal challenges.
About you
We are looking for a qualified solicitor with significant breadth of experience — someone who can confidently take ownership of legal matters across the business and work independently to resolve them. You’ll combine technical legal expertise with sound judgment, applying both to help the company move quickly while managing risk appropriately.
You will be comfortable switching between different areas of law in a single day — advising on commercial negotiations, reviewing product features for compliance, updating policies to reflect new legislation, and guiding colleagues through sensitive conversations. You’ll have the communication skills to explain complex legal issues clearly to non-lawyers, and the confidence to influence decisions at all levels of the business.
Essential
- Solicitor qualified in England and Wales, with at least 7–10 years PQE.
- Demonstrated ability to manage a wide variety of legal matters, from data protection to commercial and employment law.
- Experience supporting commercial teams and negotiating with clients, with a track record of turning legal complexity into practical, plain-language advice.
- Proven ability to work independently, prioritise effectively, and make decisions in fast-moving environments.
- Experience drafting and managing employment contracts, policies, and handbooks.
Desirable
- Experience in the technology, SaaS, or data sectors.
- Familiarity with IP protections, data licensing, and platform compliance considerations.
- Prior in-house experience in a growth-stage or scale-up company.
