Job Summary:
The Associate Medical Director, Medical Affairs serves as a key scientific and strategic resource within the Medical Affairs organization, supporting the development and execution of medical strategy for the company's immunology and inflammation (I&I) portfolio, with a primary focus on lupus. This role partners closely with Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Regulatory Affairs, and other key departments to ensure that medical insights are translated into meaningful scientific exchange with the external medical community. The Associate Medical Director, Medical Affairs drives evidence generation strategy, medical education initiatives, and advisory board development to support the clinical and scientific goals of the organization.
Work Arrangement & Location:
Hybrid - This position follows a hybrid work schedule, requiring a minimum of two (2) days on-site per week — currently designated as Tuesday and Wednesday. Additional on-site days may be required based on business needs, team priorities, or leadership direction.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute the medical affairs strategy for the I&I pipeline, including lupus indications, in alignment with overall program objectives and corporate goals.
- Serve as a scientific lead and internal expert on disease areas within immunology and inflammation, synthesizing emerging clinical evidence and competitive intelligence to inform strategic decisions.
- Lead the development and review of medical content including medical education materials, slide decks, congress abstracts, and scientific publications.
- Establish and maintain relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), academic centers of excellence, and patient advocacy organizations within the lupus and I&I space.
- Support the design and execution of medical advisory board meetings, ensuring scientific rigor and actionable insights from external expert engagement.
- Partner with Field Medical Affairs teams to ensure accurate, balanced, and up-to-date scientific communication tools and resources are available to Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs). Ensure consistent, compliant scientific exchange in the field. Participate in key field engagements when necessary.
- Collaborate with Clinical Development and Biostatistics to support the medical interpretation of clinical trial data, including contributing to clinical study reports and regulatory submissions.
- Provide scientific input on Phase III and Phase IIIb/IV study concepts, investigator-sponsored study (ISS) proposals, and outcomes research initiatives.
- Provide medical input into brand strategy, launch planning, and lifecycle management.
- Represent Medical Affairs in cross-functional project teams, contributing scientific expertise to commercial readiness, market access, and payer engagement strategies.
- Ensure medical accuracy of promotional and non-promotional materials.
- Monitor and interpret clinical developments, published literature, and conference data to proactively identify gaps and opportunities within the therapeutic landscape.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications:
- Education: Advanced doctoral degree (MD, PharmD, or PhD) in a relevant life sciences discipline required; clinical or research training in immunology, rheumatology, nephrology, or a related specialty strongly preferred
- Minimum of 7 years of pharmaceutical or biotech industry experience in Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, or a related medical function preferred.
- Deep scientific expertise in autoimmune disease, specifically lupus (SLE and/or CLE), rheumatology, and/or adjacent immunology/inflammation indications.
- Experience developing and executing medical affairs strategies, including KOL engagement, medical education, and evidence generation planning. Established network within the lupus/rheumatology community.
- Demonstrated ability to critically evaluate and synthesize clinical and scientific literature, including clinical trial data and real-world evidence.
- Familiarity with promotional review processes and compliance frameworks governing medical communications in the pharmaceutical industry.
- Prior experience with advisory board design, scientific meeting planning, and external expert relationship management.
- Proficiency with scientific databases, medical literature tools, and standard office productivity platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop cross-functional teams in a fast-paced, resource-constrained biotech or pharmaceutical environment; fosters a culture of accountability, inclusion, and continuous learning.
- Proven track record of influencing without authority across organizational boundaries, driving alignment among senior stakeholders, and building consensus on complex scientific or operational priorities.
- Experience navigating organizational ambiguity and change; capable of defining structure, establishing priorities, and scaling functional capabilities in alignment with evolving corporate strategy.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific, regulatory, or operational content for diverse audiences, including executive leadership, clinical teams, and external partners.
- Strong active listening skills and the ability to synthesize input from diverse perspectives into clear, actionable communications that build alignment and drive decision-making.
Salary Range:
The expected annual salary range for this position is listed below. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus and long-term incentive award (e.g., equity) may be available based on individual and Company performance.
Salary Range
$193,000 - $230,472 USD
