Job Summary:
The Senior Director, Corporate Counsel – Compliance & Employment is a senior legal leader responsible for advising the company on employment matters and providing practical, risk-based guidance across a range of compliance, regulatory, and policy areas. This role serves as the lead legal advisor on people-related matters while supporting the development of clear, pragmatic policies that align with the company’s business needs and regulatory environment.
In a pre-commercial biotechnology setting, this individual will work closely with HR, leadership, and cross-functional stakeholders to address employment issues, manage risk, and establish scalable, fit-for-purpose policies and practices. This includes advising on a range of regulatory and operational considerations, such as healthcare-related requirements, GxP frameworks, and other business-critical regulatory obligations.
The ideal candidate brings strong employment law expertise, sound judgment, and a business-oriented mindset. This individual will operate as part of a small, collaborative legal team and will also support broader legal matters as needed, contributing as a generalist across the legal function as the company continues to scale.
Work Arrangement & Location:
Hybrid - This position follows a hybrid work schedule, requiring a minimum of two (2) days on-site per week — currently designated as Tuesday and Wednesday. Additional on-site days may be required based on business needs, team priorities, or leadership direction.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as the lead legal advisor on employment and people-related matters, providing practical, risk-calibrated guidance on employee relations, performance management, disciplinary actions, separations, and workforce-related decisions.
- Advise HR and leadership on employment law compliance across relevant jurisdictions, including federal and multi-state requirements, in a manner that is clear, actionable, and aligned with business objectives.
- Draft, review, and maintain core employment-related documents, including offer letters, separation agreements, restrictive covenant agreements, and employee handbook and policy materials.
- Support the development and refinement of company policies and practices across a range of compliance, regulatory, and operational areas, ensuring alignment with applicable frameworks (e.g., GxP, healthcare-related requirements, and other operational obligations) while remaining practical and fit for purpose.
- Identify and assess compliance, regulatory, and operational risks, and advise on appropriate mitigation strategies by translating requirements into clear, workable guidance for the business.
- Support a range of regulatory and operational compliance needs as they arise, including business-critical obligations.
- Support or oversee workplace investigations as needed, ensuring matters are handled appropriately, efficiently, and with sound judgment.
- Manage outside employment counsel relationships, including oversight of litigation, and specialized advisory work, as applicable.
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, including HR, Finance, IT, and other functions, to address employment, policy, data privacy, and related operational considerations affecting the workforce.
- Support broader legal department priorities as needed, including contract review, corporate governance matters, and other general legal support, with responsibilities evolving as the company scales.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications:
- Education: Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school; active bar admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction required.
- Minimum of 12 years of relevant legal experience, including significant employment law experience and a combination of law firm and in-house practice.
- Prior in-house experience in a biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or life sciences organization strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to advise on a broad range of employment matters in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.
- Experience drafting and maintaining employment policies and related documentation.
- Familiarity with compliance, regulatory, and operational considerations relevant to life sciences organizations (e.g., GxP frameworks, healthcare-related requirements, and state or local obligations) preferred.
- Strong expertise in employment law and practical application in a business environment.
- Working knowledge of compliance, regulatory, and operational considerations relevant to life sciences organizations.
- Ability to operate independently and take ownership of key legal areas while remaining collaborative and team-oriented.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide clear, concise, and pragmatic legal advice.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusted relationships across functions and levels.
Salary Range:
The expected annual salary range for this position is listed below. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus and long-term incentive award (e.g., equity) may be available based on individual and Company performance.
Salary Range
$279,000 - $308,000 USD
