Senior Accountant (Tax)

Role Statement 

The Senior Accountant will be responsible for a range of tasks to help their Business Services team deliver timely service to internal and external stakeholders. The core focus is to take ownership of client accounting and tax compliance work, apply growing technical expertise, and support junior team members by sharing knowledge and guiding task execution. 

Key Responsibilities

Client Work & Technical Delivery

  • Prepare financial statements and income tax returns for individuals, companies, trusts, and superannuation funds.
  • Complete Business Activity Statements (BAS), Instalment Activity Statements (IAS), and other quarterly/annual tax compliance matters.
  • Conduct tax planning activities under guidance, including interim work and assessment notices.
  • Reconcile accounting files across platforms (e.g., Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks).
  • Liaise with the ATO regarding client matters and compliance issues. 

Client Communication & Engagement

  • Liaise with clients to clarify queries and gather required documentation.
  • Attend meetings as required to support relationship management.
  • Draft correspondence and assist in preparing client updates. 

Team Collaboration & Support

  • Provide informal guidance and support to junior accountants, including answering technical queries and assisting with task prioritisation.
  • Participate in team discussions and contribute to knowledge sharing.

Productivity & Fee Management

  • Monitor personal productivity against budget expectations and proactively manage workflow to meet deadlines.
  • Assist in preparing fees for client work when required. 

Professional Development & Standards

  • Maintain up-to-date technical knowledge through training, webinars, and independent research.
  • Contribute to process improvements by identifying inefficiencies and suggesting enhancements. 

Skills & Experience 

  • Relevant bachelor’s degree with focus in Accounting, Finance or Economics.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in public practice accounting.
  • Knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (particularly Excel).
  • Proficiency with accounting software (Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks etc.).
