Originations and Capital Markets Associate

Location: Remote, Midwest or East coast region preferred

Travel Expectation: 50-75%

Position Description

The Business Development, Origination and Capital Markets (“OCM”) Associate position at Bertram Capital assists in leading the development and growth of new investment opportunities and manages intermediary, lender and service relationships in the US and Canada.  This person works alongside the Vice President and Partner/Head of OCM with managing the overall intermediary relationship network, with primary focus on lower-middle market intermediaries, firm marketing and internal administrative/compliance processes. The position requires deep relationship development skills as well as the ability to drive new origination initiatives.

Reports to: Vice President, OCM

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Represent and extend the Bertram brand externally to ensure the firm is top of mind for deal opportunities with Intermediaries (regional boutique investment banks, and business brokers) and the firm is perceived as a leader in the middle market
  • Source investment opportunities for Bertram Capital funds and its portfolio companies
  • Be an expert on firm background, portfolio companies, investment criteria, process, and track records, to establish credibility and articulate our value proposition with intermediary community
  • Build and manage a comprehensive network of Intermediary, Lender and Service Provider relationships via regular in-person and virtual meetings
    • Plan and manage territory meetings to ensure firm meets annual intermediary contact and sourcing goals
    • Create unique events to build awareness of and preference for Bertram as an investor
    • Manage travel expenses to meet budget expectations
    • Develop, review and report firm’s strategic objectives and investment interests to Intermediaries and Service Providers via in-person meetings, phone calls, marketing materials and web site
  • Extensive business travel via market roadshows, M&A conferences, industry tradeshows, and other events with both intermediaries and investment targets. Expectations are to be on the road approximately 75% of the time in the first year and 50% of the time going forward.
  • Assist in the review and markup of Non-Disclosure Agreements and Fee Agreements associated with origination.
  • Act as a liaison between Bertram Investment Team and External Intermediaries and Services Providers
    • Coordinate communication and meetings between Investment Team and investment banks/intermediaries
    • Effectively communicate the differentiation and unique approach of Bertram’s value creation strategy (Bertram Labs)
  • Ensure deal pipeline process and intermediary communication is managed from initial sourcing through deal decline or deal closing.
  • Produce firm marketing materials and press releases
  • Analysis and management of the firm’s client relationship management system (SalesForce)
  • Perform market research and analysis
  • Review/Process Non-Disclosure Agreements
  • Produce weekly, monthly and annual reports
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of Company’s vision and strategy

Expected Results:

  • Source >600 qualified deals (size, industry profile) annually
  • Maintain at least 50% conversion rate of deals to CIMs (quality index)
  • Meet (virtually or in-person) with all Tier 1 intermediaries at least 4x/year, Tier 2 intermediaries 2x/year and 75% of Tier 3 intermediaries 1x/year in the territory
  • Develop meaningful, deep relationships with assigned intermediaries
    • Create preference for Bertram Capital for deal sourcing and when we are pursuing buy-side opportunities
  • Make regular calls into investment bankers/intermediaries to leverage relationships to assist investment team with:
    • Deal information/intelligence
    • Positioning and preference on IOIs and LOIs
    • Connecting to relevant industry bankers
  • Manage travel and living expenses within approved budget
  • Develop and deliver weekly and monthly reports on time per schedule
  • Create, implement and test at least one new marketing program per year
  • Secure a leadership role within a key ACG chapter for broader Bertram brand exposure

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Finance, or a related field
  • 7+ years product management/marketing, management or finance industry experience
    • Sales experience and sales-related business development experience is less important; role is relationship/preference and firm brand development focused
  • Outside activity interests relevant to business relationship building a significant benefit
  • Poised and articulate with outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent writing, problem solving, and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and complete deliverables on schedule
  • Proficient in Salesforce and LinkedIn
  • Proactive and devoted to excellent client service

Compensation and Benefits

  • The expected salary range for this position is: $175,000- $200,000 total annual compensation plus additional annual bonus beginning after 1 year of tenure. Offered salary may be based on a variety of factors including skills, experience, and qualifications for the role.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits are provided at no cost to the employee. We offer a generous 401K match as well as a “take what you need” PTO policy.
