Composites Design Engineer – Advanced Concepts

The Composites Design Engineer will develop detailed composite concepts and definition under senior technical direction. The role supports aircraft development while building methods, evidence, and reusable capability for broader Advanced Systems teams and partners. This position will be based onsite at our South Burlington, VT office location, our Raleigh, NC office. Remote candidates may be considered for a hybrid role, with monthly visits to South Burlington, VT for in person work.

How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:

  • Creates laminate and core layouts, ply concepts, local details, joints, producibility features and design documentation
  • Coordinate with Senior Composites; Structures Design; Stress; Manufacturing; NDT
  • Produce and maintain Composite layouts; ply and core definitions; detail studies; design documentation
  • Support the Program Director / Chief Engineer by adds product-definition capacity while preserving senior oversight of methods, allowables and critical decisions
  • Document assumptions, interfaces, decisions, risks, and verification needs in configuration-controlled engineering records
  • Communicate status, unresolved issues, and recommended actions clearly in technical and program reviews

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, materials, manufacturing engineering, or a related engineering discipline; 0–3 years of relevant experience. Composite coursework, internships, research, hands-on fabrication, or substantial design projects may satisfy the experience expectation
  • Working knowledge of composite materials and processes, laminate and sandwich construction, bonded and mechanically fastened joints, engineering drawings, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Able to create or modify 3D CAD and product definition, incorporate manufacturing and inspection constraints, and document design assumptions. Familiarity with damage tolerance, environmental durability, NDT, and repair considerations at an introductory level
  • Coursework, internship, research, or project evidence involving a composite part, laminate/core definition, tooling or manufacturing process, joint design, aircraft build, Formula SAE, rocketry, or similar hardware. Proficiency in CATIA/3DEXPERIENCE or another production CAD system is acceptable evidence; the specific platform is not mandatory at entry level
  • Ability to communicate technical assumptions, limitations, risks, and recommendations clearly and work effectively across disciplines
  • Must be a US Person to be considered for the role

Above and Beyond Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting a new aircraft, transport-category aircraft, or another safety-critical complex product
  • Experience taking work from concept through design review, build, integration, test, or certification evidence
  • Experience improving engineering methods, automation, data quality, or cross-functional execution

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This role requires extended computer work and regular access to office, laboratory, manufacturing, hangar, aircraft, and test environments. Occasional travel, hands-on hardware support, nonstandard test hours, and use of required personal protective equipment may be necessary.

The wage listed here reflects our best faith estimate for this role. We pay competitively and base compensation on a variety of factors including skills, experience, industry background, and the evolving needs of the role. Compensation

$85,000 - $115,000 USD
