Software Engineer - Composites

South Burlington, Vermont, United States

At BETA Technologies, we apply our intellectual curiosity, passion for aviation, and commitment to sustainability toward a shared mission of revolutionizing electric aviation. Regardless of the position one holds, each team member brings their talent and desire to positively impact the environment and lives of others in a refreshing, vibrant, and inclusive culture.

BETA is building electric aviation products and the manufacturing systems required to produce them at scale. We are looking for a Software Engineer with strong computational geometry experience to develop production-quality software that turns part and assembly geometry into validated manufacturing outputs — beginning with composite cure and trim tool design, targeting a 50% or greater reduction in engineering cycle time. This role sits at the intersection of manufacturing engineering, CAD/CAM, tooling, and software, and will expand over time to cover CTE compensation, springback modeling, automated recipe generation, and CNC programming — an opportunity for an engineer who enjoys hard geometry problems and wants their work to directly shape how we build aerospace-grade aircraft.

How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:

  • Develop software that imports, analyzes, transforms, and generates complex 3D CAD geometry
  • Generate and validate production tooling geometry, including tool surfaces, offsets, splits, boundaries, flanges, features, machining allowances, and trim definitions
  • Develop automated manufacturability checks that identify geometry, tooling, and process risks early in the engineering cycle
  • Create internal engineering tools that reduce manual effort, improve design consistency, and provide traceable, repeatable manufacturing outputs
  • Integrate geometry-processing workflows with CAD, CAM, CNC machining, and downstream manufacturing systems
  • Spend time in the factory and tooling-design environment to understand how software output is used and to close the loop between digital models and physical tools

Following successful automation of the initial aluminum-tooling workflow, the role will expand to advance additional composites manufacturing capabilities, including:

  • Accurate coefficient-of-thermal-expansion (CTE) compensation for tooling and part geometry
  • Integration of third-party springback models into the engineering workflow
  • Automated recipe generation and process-definition workflows
  • CNC trim-programming automation

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related technical field; or 5+ years of equivalent practical experience
  • Strong software-engineering background experience building reliable software used by engineers, operators, customers, or production systems
  • Demonstrated ability to take an ambiguous technical problem from concept through implementation and deployment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly when software must account for physical-system constraints
  • Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate closely with subject-matter experts outside software engineering
  • A practical, ownership-oriented mindset and willingness to learn manufacturing processes in detail

Above and Beyond Qualifications:

  • Experience with computational geometry, geometric modeling, CAD/CAM, computer graphics, robotics, or engineering simulation
  • Experience processing CAD representations such as B-reps, surfaces, curves, meshes, point clouds, or solid models
  • Experience with geometry operations including offsets, intersections, projections, trimming, tessellation, topology repair, feature recognition, or path planning
  • Proficiency in Python, Rust, Go, C++, or another language suitable for high-performance engineering software
  • Experience integrating software with CAD, CAM, PLM, CNC, metrology, or manufacturing-execution systems
  • Familiarity with composites manufacturing, cure and trim tooling, CNC machining, aerospace structures, or factory automation
  • Experience with 3D printing
  • Experience working in a small, high-ownership team where requirements evolve quickly and software is deployed close to operations

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This role is based in Burlington/South Burlington, Vermont. The work environment includes both office and production-floor settings. The engineer should be comfortable spending time in the factory to observe manufacturing processes, understand tooling use, and collaborate directly with technicians and manufacturing engineers.

Note: we would like the candidate to submit a portfolio as well as a resume.

The wage listed here reflects our best faith estimate for this role. We pay competitively and base compensation on a variety of factors including skills, experience, industry background, and the evolving needs of the role. We remain committed to fair and equitable pay and we're happy to discuss during the interview process.
