What are we looking for?

We are looking for someone to join us as our first Director, Corporate Counsel for our international expansion. You will join our lean and highly impactful legal team supporting Teladoc’s key asset, BetterHelp, as it scales its operations outside of the US. Teladoc is an ever-growing, dynamic and world-spanning public parent company. BetterHelp is the world’s largest virtual counseling service and a critical component to Teladoc’s current and future growth. 

This individual will be a key contributor to all aspects of BetterHelp’s international legal needs. An ideal candidate for this position will be fluent in English with additional legal experience in one of our key European target markets (France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain or Italy). This team member must have flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and organizational needs. They will have an outstanding sense of commerciality and will be solutions focused. In addition, the candidate will have the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced, growing, exciting environment and to take ownership of projects and programs.

What will you do?

This role works across multiple areas of law including contracts, litigation, IP, health and telehealth regulation, government affairs, employment, compliance and general corporate. Independent management of outside counsel is integral to the position, as well as hands-on production of work products.  The Director, Corporate Counsel (International) will report directly to the General Counsel of BetterHelp. 

As our international legal counsel, you will: 

  • Advise, track and implement policies and procedures to comply with non US data privacy requirements  
  • Advise, track and implement policies and procedures to comply with marketing, digital services/platform laws, consumer protection and trade practices requirements in international markets 
  • Advise, track and implement policies and procedures to comply with applicable health/telehealth regulations, including, if tariffs apply and the legal requirements thereto 
  • Advise, track and implement policies and procedures to comply with employee and contractor legal requirements and assist in drafting terms and/or contracts for contractors and employees 
  • Provide strategic advice regarding corporate entity structuring and implement recommended arrangements. Advise the business on local country registration requirements (as applicable) 
  • Manage active litigation matters and coordinate regulatory/government inquiries (as applicable) 
  • Negotiate and draft product partnership agreements, sales contracts, marketing affiliate/partner agreements advertising/creative/podcast/influencer agreements, SAAS, and vendor agreements in compliance with applicable laws with a focus on data security and privacy laws across the globe

What will you NOT do?

  • You will NOT worry about "runway", "cash left", or "how much time we have until the next round". We have the startup DNA but we're fully backed and funded, all the way to success.
  • You will NOT be confined to your "job". You will get involved in product, marketing, business strategy, and almost everything we do.
  • You will NOT be bogged down by office politics, ego, or bad attitude. Only positive, pleasure-to-work-with people are allowed here!
  • You will NOT get yourself burned out. We work hard but we believe in maintaining a sustainable work/life balance. Really.

Can I work remotely?

BetterHelp is based in California but we're a fully remote team. For those in Europe, you'll work your local hours but ask that a portion of your working hours overlap with our US team to ensure effective collaboration. Employees may also be asked to visit our Mountain View, CA office (up to three times per year) to build strong team connections and experience our culture. Travel expenses will be covered, and reasonable accommodations will be made for those with unique travel challenges.

Requirements

You must be egoless, value collaboration, and be ready to put in the hard work to accomplish whatever the job demands.

Also required for this position: 

  • Fluency in English and experience working as a lawyer (preferably in-house) in one or more of our key European target markets (France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain or Italy). Fluency in another European language is a plus. 
  • Law degree with active licenses to practice law. 
  • 7-10 years of relevant consumer business, online platform and/or health care legal experience required. Experience with privacy, regulatory/government inquiries, marketing/advertising law highly desirable.
