What are we looking for?

As a Head of Product Design with BetterHelp, you will lead a team of designers with a passion for our mission and working directly for the CPO. In your role, you will have the opportunity to shape the vision/strategy of our UX/UI for our marketplace while mentoring/managing a team of 8+ designers. It’s an opportunity to work on a product at scale, at a company that still has a lot of headroom for innovation and growth. 

We are looking for someone who is passionate about building and growing a high performing design team and function, creating seamlessly designed solutions for our clients and therapists. The ideal candidate is an effective leader who can both create a product design strategy, oversee the creation of a design system, build in processes that help the team collaborate effectively, and ensure we create a consistent brand strategy across devices & apps. 

What will you do?

  • Enhance the BH Experience: Lead the design and implementation of a seamless brand experience across the marketplace, for multiple brands, and apps
  • Strategic Thinking & Visioning: Co-develop a comprehensive design strategy in partnership with the CPO that aligns with our objectives and provides a great experience for our customers.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Establish strong and effective partnerships with product management, engineering, data science, and user research teams to drive cohesive experiences.
  • Hire, coach and manage a high performing team of product designers, providing design direction, clear feedback, and pushing the quality of design work.
  • Ensure tight collaboration with User Research to ensure we are learning and incorporating timely feedback throughout our process, as well as addressing customer pain points. 
  • Actively seek ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness of our product design process.
  • Ensure the team is working on the highest priority items that will drive a measurable impact. 
  • Leverage best practices for tools, designs/wireframes, and prototyping to support the product teams initiatives 
  • Use quantitative and qualitative information to continually iterate and improve on the user experience.
  • Uphold the Craft, Improve the Process: Ensure the design bar is kept high across visual and interaction design, systems, and content strategy. Lead effective design reviews to provide constructive feedback, ensure design consistency, and elevate the overall quality of the design output.

  • You will NOT worry about "runway", "cash left", or "how much time we have until the next round". We have the startup DNA but we're fully backed and funded, all the way to success.
  • You will NOT be confined to your "job". You will get involved in product, marketing, business strategy, and almost everything we do.
  • You will NOT be bogged down by office politics, ego, or bad attitude. Only positive, pleasure-to-work-with people are allowed here!
  • You will NOT get yourself burned out. We work hard but we believe in maintaining a sustainable work/life balance. Really.

Can I work remotely?

Yes. We operate on PST and candidates in any time zone are welcome to apply. We ask employees to travel to our San Jose, CA office up to three times per year plus one company-wide offsite to collaborate in person and strengthen working relationships. Travel expenses are covered and reasonable accommodations are made for those under unique circumstances who cannot travel.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience leading product design 
  • Mastery of Craft: A respected designer that has mastered their craft across visual and interaction design, systems, information architecture, content strategy, and is not scared to get into the details and work alongside their team.
  • Org Building: A team builder with 8+ years of leading and managing ICs and managers, as well as experience in hiring top talent.
  • Strategic Thinking & Visioning: A meticulous problem solver that can see and communicate the big picture in an inspiring way. Has the ability to translate high-level business goals into actionable strategies and design guidance based on customer insights.
  • Track Record of Shipping: An experienced builder that knows what it takes to ship a product, and can set up the right processes to do so at scale.
  • Strong Collaboration: An inspiring communicator that builds trust and is able to influence and bring alignment across the organization while ensuring design integrity and quality.
  • Inspiring Mentorship: A mentor who is energized by growing others’ careers, developing senior designers, knows how to empower a team to drive their projects to success.
  • Adaptability & Resilience: Ability to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, effectively managing competing priorities and shifting demands from various stakeholders.
  • Customer Obsession: A passionate advocate for customer needs that can anticipate what customers want and why, making product decisions based on customer insights.
  • Data-driven Decision Making: An expert at leveraging data and metrics to inform design decisions, ensuring that design solutions are both user-centric and aligned with business goals.
  • Systems Thinking & Execution: A systems builder capable of contributing to and improving design and component systems that ensure consistency and scalability
  • Kindness & Humility: An empathic teammate that embraces vulnerability, and makes themselves available for their team and beyond.
  • High attention to detail, desire to understand all aspects of our product 
  • A portfolio of projects that include user research, ideation, launch, iteration, and results. Please provide a link.
  • Ability to balance business, product, and user needs.
  • Experience with design tools to effectively communicate UX solutions (Figma, Adobe CC).
  • Understanding of A/B testing and ability to make improvements based on quantitative results and qualitative feedback.
  • Ability to prioritize based on user impact and development effort.

The base salary range for this position is $190,000-$245,000. In addition to the base salary, this position is eligible for a performance bonus and the extensive benefits listed here (subject to eligibility requirements): Teladoc Health Benefits 2025. Total compensation is based on several factors – including, but not limited to, type of position, location, education level, work experience, and certifications.
