Associate Director of Care Expansions Partnerships
Who are we and why should you join us?
BetterHelp is on a mission to remove the traditional barriers to therapy and make mental health care more accessible to everyone. Founded in 2013, we are now the world’s largest online therapy service – providing affordable and convenient therapy across the globe. Our network of over 30,000 licensed therapists has helped millions of people take ownership of their mental health and change their lives forever. And we’re not stopping there – as the unmet need for mental health services continues to grow, BetterHelp is committed to being part of the solution.
As a Associate Director, Care Expansion Partnerships at BetterHelp, you’ll join a diverse team of licensed clinicians, engineers, product pros, creatives, marketers, and business leaders who share a passion for expanding access to therapy. And as a mental health company, we take employee mental health just as seriously as we do our mission. We seriously invest in our team’s well-being and professional development, because we know that business and individual growth go hand-in-hand.
This role will lead origination and execution of high-complexity, high-value partnerships that both expand BetterHelp's care model and open new distribution channels across emerging institutional verticals. This includes referral pathways for higher-acuity needs (e.g., SMI, SUD, eating disorders), digital therapeutic integrations, and net-new partnerships within large, regulated-sector organizations that require long sales cycles, deep relationship management, and significant internal coordination to serve effectively.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for a senior partnership professional who combines healthcare expertise with the ability to navigate highly complex, multi-layered institutional relationships. This role is responsible for building net-new pipeline across both clinical care expansion verticals and emerging institutional verticals - categories that demand patience, precision, and long-horizon relationship building. You will own the full partnership lifecycle: sourcing, structuring, negotiating, launching, and monitoring.
Success requires exceptional executive presence, strategic thinking, and the ability to manage extended deal timelines without losing momentum. You will work cross-functionally with Product, Clinical, Legal, Compliance, and Marketing to adapt BetterHelp's offering, materials, and internal practices to meet the requirements of each new partner category. This is a high-accountability, high-autonomy role designed for someone who can operate at both the strategic and execution level - and who thrives in environments where the path is not yet fully defined.
What will you do?
- Lead outbound business development efforts to identify, research, and engage prospective partners across targeted domestic verticals, including care expansion categories and large, high-complexity institutional accounts.
- Develop and execute go-to-market strategies for net-new partner categories, including sectors characterized by long sales cycles, layered procurement processes, and rigorous compliance requirements.
- Build and manage a robust pipeline across multiple verticals simultaneously, advancing opportunities from early-stage engagement through contract execution - including deals that span 12-24+ months from initial outreach to close.
- Cultivate long-term institutional relationships at the senior and executive level, maintaining consistent engagement and trust-building across extended timelines.
- Navigate complex procurement, contracting, and compliance processes common to large regulated-sector organizations, coordinating closely with Legal, Finance, and Compliance throughout.
- Work cross-functionally with Product, Clinical, and Operations teams to assess feasibility of new partnership constructs and identify where BetterHelp's practices, materials, or infrastructure may need to evolve to meet institutional partner requirements.
- Lead internal readiness efforts for new institutional verticals - including guiding adaptation of clinical protocols, compliance documentation, product configurations, and partner-facing materials - in partnership with relevant internal stakeholders.
- Develop partnership strategies across specialty behavioral health providers (SMI, SUD, eating disorders), digital therapeutic partners, and other referral-based care organizations aligned to BetterHelp's care expansion roadmap.
- Structure creative partnership models including white-label offerings, network extensions, embedded solutions, referral agreements, and other channel arrangements appropriate to each partner type.
- Deliver partner-facing presentations, onboarding sessions, and demos with a focus on executive-level commercial discussions and deal advancement.
- Collaborate with Marketing and internal stakeholders to build customized value propositions, one-pagers, and integration models tailored to each partner's unique needs and regulatory context.
- Design and operationalize referral pathways with Clinical and Product teams to reduce member turnaways and improve care continuity.
- Monitor partner performance and referral volume to optimize care expansion impact over time.
- Represent emerging partner verticals internally, informing product roadmap considerations and category expansion strategy.
What will you NOT do?
- You will NOT worry about "runway", "cash left", or "how much time we have until the next round". We have the startup DNA but we're fully backed and funded, all the way to success.
- You will NOT be confined to your "job". You will get involved in product, marketing, business strategy, and almost everything we do.
- You will NOT be bogged down by office politics, ego, or bad attitude. Only positive, pleasure-to-work-with people are allowed here!
- You will NOT get yourself burned out. We work hard but we believe in maintaining a sustainable work/life balance. Really.
Can I work remotely?
Yes. We operate on PST and candidates in any time zone are welcome to apply. We ask employees to travel to our San Jose, CA office up to three times per year plus one company-wide offsite to collaborate in person and strengthen working relationships. Travel expenses are covered and reasonable accommodations are made for those under unique circumstances who cannot travel.
