AC Mitigation Modeler
Position Summary
BGE Inc. is seeking an experienced AC Mitigation Modeler to lead AC interference analysis, mitigation design, and implementation for pipeline, utility, and energy infrastructure projects. This role serves as a technical subject matter expert, performing complex electromagnetic modeling, supporting field execution, and mentoring engineering staff.
The ideal candidate brings strong engineering fundamentals and deep experience in cathodic protection, pipeline integrity, AC interference analysis, and mitigation system design. This person will work with clients, project teams, and field personnel to deliver defensible solutions that meet safety, regulatory, constructability, and operational requirements.
Responsibilities
AC Mitigation Engineering & Modeling
- Develop, analyze, and validate AC interference models using SES CDEGS and/or Elsyca IRIS.
- Perform electromagnetic induction studies for pipelines, utility corridors, transmission lines, substations, and related infrastructure.
- Design AC mitigation, grounding, decoupling, gradient control, and related protection systems.
- Perform calculations and evaluations to support safe, effective mitigation designs.
- Prepare technical reports, calculations, specifications, drawings, and documentation.
- Defend analyses, assumptions, methodologies, and recommendations with clients, stakeholders, and regulators.
Cathodic Protection & Integrity Support
- Support cathodic protection system design, evaluation, and troubleshooting.
- Analyze AC/DC interference impacts on pipeline integrity and corrosion control.
- Evaluate existing mitigation systems and recommend improvements.
- Partner with integrity, corrosion, and operations teams on practical, cost-effective solutions.
Field Support & Data Collection
- Conduct and oversee field investigations, testing, data collection, and validation.
- Obtain and maintain Operator Qualifications (OQs) necessary to perform field services.
- Support installation and commissioning with real-time technical guidance.
- Verify mitigation designs through field measurements and post-installation testing.
Technical Leadership
- Serve as a technical mentor for engineers and field personnel.
- Train team members on AC mitigation theory, modeling, design, and field testing.
- Review engineering deliverables for technical accuracy and consistency.
- Support business development through technical presentations, client meetings, and proposals.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Corrosion Engineering, or related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or AMPP/NACE CP-4 certification.
- 8+ years of experience in AC mitigation, cathodic protection, corrosion engineering, or pipeline integrity.
- Advanced proficiency with SES CDEGS and/or Elsyca IRIS.
- Strong understanding of:
- Electromagnetic induction
- Electrical grounding systems
- AC interference analysis
- Cathodic protection principles
- Pipeline integrity engineering
- Electrical safety considerations
- Experience developing and defending engineering models.
- Strong technical writing and report preparation skills.
- Strong communication and client-facing skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet demanding schedules.
- Experience supporting construction and field implementation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with transmission line and pipeline co-location studies.
- Knowledge of PHMSA, NESC, IEEE, AMPP, and related industry standards.
- Experience with mitigation device selection, grounding design, and commissioning.
- Project management experience.
- Consulting experience with pipeline operators and utility clients.
- Experience reviewing third-party analyses and designs.
