THE OPPORTUNITY: Senior Director of Backend Engineering

REPORTS TO: CTO

LOCATION: West Coast - Remote (PST Hours Required)

Headquartered in Los Angeles, CA with an office in New York, NY, Birdy Grey supports remote work for eligible roles. We ask that all employees travel to either office once a quarter. This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship. #LI-Hybrid

We are seeking a Senior Director of Engineering for our Supply Chain and Backend Systems to lead the development of our technical infrastructure, ensuring seamless connectivity between our front-end platform, backend systems, and supply chain operations. This role is responsible for architecting scalable and resilient systems that enable Just-In-Time (JIT) production workflows, real-time data synchronization, and end-to-end process automation.

As a senior engineering leader, you will manage a team of China-based engineers, oversee enterprise system integrations, and drive technical innovation across the organization. This role requires a West Coast-based candidate with fluent Mandarin skills to effectively collaborate with our U.S. and China teams.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and own the technical architecture for backend, supply chain, and fulfillment systems, ensuring seamless integration between ERP, OMS, WMS, MPS, and 3PLs.
  • Build and scale a high-performing engineering team, overseeing hiring, mentorship, and professional development.
  • Lead the development and deployment of API-based integrations that automate order flows, inventory updates, and logistics management.
  • Implement real-time monitoring, data validation, and anomaly detection to enhance system reliability and security.
  • Develop scalable microservices architecture to support high-volume SKU management and complex production workflows.
  • Oversee data engineering efforts, ensuring that all order, inventory, and logistics data is synchronized in real-time across platforms.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, including Product, Supply Chain, Ops, and Finance, to ensure technology aligns with business objectives.
  • Drive best practices in cloud infrastructure, focusing on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Develop technical roadmaps and strategy, aligning long-term engineering vision with business goals.

THE RIGHT CANDIDATE: QUALIFICATIONS & PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

EXPERIENCE / REQUIREMENTS:

  • 12+ years of engineering experience, with at least 5+ years in supply chain, logistics, or backend systems, including ERP integrations
  • Proven leadership experience managing distributed engineering teams, including offshore development teams in China.
  • Expert in cloud architecture and deployment, particularly within Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Strong background in API development, microservices architecture, and enterprise system integrations.
  • Deep understanding of SQL, NoSQL, data lakes, and real-time streaming technologies.
  • Experience building and optimizing order management, warehouse management, and fulfillment systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate complexity and drive results.
  • Fluency in Mandarin and English, with the ability to lead technical discussions and collaboration between U.S. and China teams.
