About the Opportunity
The Strategy and Global B Corp Movement department seeks to coordinate and catalyze global movement building efforts. The department takes a leading role in several key aspects of movement building, such as Global Policy, research, and marketing and communications, while also working with and empowering the wider B Global Network. The focus of the department is to contribute to the system change objectives of B Lab’s Theory of Change, with a specific emphasis on policy change, narrative shift, and network development.
The Strategy & B Corp Movement department consists of the following five sub-departments:
- JEDI
- Global Policy
- Strategic Partnerships
- Marketing, Communications, & Brand
- Insights
The Global Marketing, Communications and Brand Team is responsible for ensuring a consistent public-facing message and narrative for B Lab globally around which all employees and partners align.
This department was established in January 2020, beginning with a 2-person team. Now with 5 colleagues spanning New York, London and Amsterdam, the team is responsible for B Lab Global’s marketing, communications, and brand. This includes brand and product marketing, public relations, integrated marketing campaigns, social media, content creation, and more. As stewards of the B Lab brand, we interact with teams, board members, and funders across the network. We convene and manage Network working groups including various stakeholders across functions and organizations, all of whom help to shape our global communications strategy.
As a Copywriter at B Lab, you’ll write engaging content and help shape the verbal identity of one of the most respected brands in sustainability. We’re seeking a writer with experience building a consistent, unique voice for brands across digital platforms, either in-house or as part of an agency creative team. Working closely with colleagues around the world, this role will be responsible for crafting copy that informs, engages, and inspires our audiences across various external touchpoints. You’ll help set the tone for our nonprofit movement and community of nearly 10,000 Certified B Corps, including brands like Patagonia, Natura, Tony’s Chocolonely, and Who Gives a Crap.
Core Responsibilities
Copywriting & content creation [40%]
- Write and/or edit highly engaging short- and long-form copy and content that brings our public narrative to life:
- Brand: taglines, program descriptions, ‘about us’ content, brand guidelines, and other verbal identity elements
- Digital content: email campaigns (including newsletters and service communications), website and user-experience copy, and other promotional materials and educational resources
- Thought leadership: blogs, reports & whitepapers, op-eds, and public speaking materials
- Edit and serve as a primary writer of B Lab Global’s blog and monthly newsletter, in line with content calendar and in collaboration with Digital Communications Coordinator
- Ensure copy and content is tailored to and relevant for different audiences, with a focus on ESG-curious business leaders and journalists, as well as Certified B Corp marketing teams
- Support periodic content updates to B Lab Global’s website, rewriting pages for clarity, SEO, and accuracy in collaboration with Digital Communications Coordinator
- Publish and make updates to B Lab Global website content using our Content Management System (CMS), Contentful
- Refine and iterate clear, directive, user-experience copy for B Lab’s digital products, including the new B Impact platform, in collaboration with Product team
- Demonstrate exceptional attention to detail, grammar, and syntax
- Proof creative work (both own and others') to ensure accuracy and adherence to style guidelines
Verbal identity & style [25%]
- Partner with marketing and communications colleagues on naming, taglines, and messaging for new initiatives, programs, and products
- Serve as organizational ‘owner’ for B Lab style guides and verbal identity resources; suggest and oversee revisions or additions to resources as appropriate
- Partner with Brand and Design Manager on developing B Lab’s brand books for both staff (Network) and clients (B Corp Community)
- Enable and empower all departments and functions to communicate in B Lab’s brand voice, answering questions and helping to educate colleagues about B Lab style
Stakeholder engagement & project management: [25%]
- Skillfully manage multiple projects of varied levels of complexity, timeframes, and needs for involvement of internal and external stakeholders
- Collaborate with colleagues from the Global Network to identify and disseminate best practices for copywriting, serving as a go-to resource for advice and expertise
- Coordinate with editorial counterparts at regional B Lab organizations to understand what resources are being created locally and how we can amplify and reuse existing materials
- As needed, work with translators to localize brand books and other materials
Research & learning [10%]
- Become an expert on proven practices and pitfalls in sustainability marketing, ensuring that B Lab is continuously improving and holding itself to high standards
- Collaborate with legal, policy, and compliance colleagues and consultants to ensure that marketing claims are aligned with changing regulations
- Consult internal resources and conduct original research (including interviews) to learn about and share case studies on how B Corps are advancing B Lab’s mission
Major objectives for the role in the first 6-12 months
- Learn and apply existing style and brand guidelines: Become an expert on B Lab’s existing guidelines, including style, brand, and inclusive language, and apply them consistently
- Contribute to B Lab digital channels: Research and write original content for B Lab Global’s blog, email newsletters, and other digital channels
- Create new taglines and brand book: In collaboration with marketing, creative, and legal colleagues, help lead a significant rewrite of B Lab’s brand book to reflect new organizational strategy and changes in regulatory landscape, including the EU’s Green Claims and Empowering Consumers directives; learn and apply best practices to ensure that B Corp brand resources are both verifiable and compelling, demonstrating our leadership role in sustainability marketing
About You
- 4+ years of experience writing approachable, persuasive copy (agency or in-house)
- 2+ years of experience writing for digital channels, including email, website, blogs, and social
- Experience applying brand and style guidelines to cultivate a consistent, distinct brand voice
- A creative, collaborative approach; comfort working with both creative partners and clients
- Ability to prioritize tasks, communicate your capacity, and manage your time to meet deadlines
- Attention to detail; able to proofread and edit your own and others’ work for grammar and style
- Commitment to applying JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) principles in your work
- Comfort working in a dynamic, matrixed team structure and distributed, remote-first organization
Though not required, the following experiences and skills are highly valued:
- Experience developing verbal identity or brand guidelines, particularly for a global brand
- Comfort using a variety of digital tools for project management and collaboration, including Asana, Google Workspace, Slack, Image Relay (or other DAM), and Contentful (or similar CMS)
- Experience editing user-centric copy for digital products with clear, concise, prescriptive writing
- Knowledge or demonstrated interest in sustainability, ESG, or social justice issues; expertise in responsible, sustainable marketing practices would be particularly valuable
- Written fluency in a language other than English, particularly Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, or German
- Experience working in a multicultural, multilingual organization with a global presence
Compensation Details
B Lab has a compensation plan that includes:
- An annual salary in the range of $74,500 - $79,700 based on experience and skills
- Excellent health benefits package including access to medical, vision and dental coverage
- Paid time off for vacation - in your first year, you’ll start with 15 days (prorated in a to your start date)
- Additional paid time off for organizational closures
- 403(b) with a match of up to 3%
- Unlimited sick and personal time - if you need it, use it
- After your first year of employment, 40 hours paid time off for community service; paid parental leave; and time and budget for your professional development (we assess this PD budget annually)
