Product Engineer - Remote
About Blackbird
Our Commitment
Blackbird Health is clinician-founded, owned, and operated by dedicated professionals. We believe that in order to fulfill our ambitious mission of supporting children with the very best care, we must build the best possible team.
Blackbird Health offers virtual and in-person mental health services for children and young adults in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and New Jersey, with plans to expand to new states in 2026. Blackbird services include comprehensive evaluations and assessments, medication management, and a wide range of therapy services.
Clinicians at Blackbird Health take the time to truly understand what is causing a child’s challenges. By looking at how their brain, body, and behavior interact, Blackbird Care Teams see connections that are often missed when these areas are assessed separately. Nearly nine out of 10 young people who need support have more than one factor affecting them, which is why our whole-child model excels at identifying how conditions overlap. This deeper understanding allows Blackbird clinicians to create precise care plans that address the underlying cause of challenges, not just manage the symptoms.
If you care deeply about helping others and are eager to join a collaborative, innovative community where you will be encouraged and supported to thrive both personally and professionally, Blackbird is a great place to advance your career. Our teams are integral to the success of our patients and our mission, and we are excited to welcome more compassionate, inspired thought leaders to our growing organization. We want your time here to be the most meaningful of your career. Join us and help change mental health care for children for the better.
Position Summary
Blackbird Health is looking to hire a Product Engineer—a role we define as a founder-in-residence for our engineering teams. You are not just a developer who picks up tickets; you are a product thinker who writes world-class code. Sitting at the intersection of Engineering, Product, and Design, you will own features from the back of the napkin idea to production deployment and user feedback.
This role is for a Senior Engineer on the cusp of Principal level who wants to exercise their product and program management muscles. You will work directly with clinical stakeholders to define the what and the why, then architect and build the how. If you are a former founder, a technical PM who misses coding, or an engineer who is tired of building the wrong things, this role is for you.
What makes you, you:
- Product-Minded Builder: You don't wait for a spec. You ask, Who is this for? and What problem are we solving? before writing a single line of code.
- Full-Stack Polymath: You are as comfortable discussing database schema design as you are tweaking CSS animations or setting up analytics events.
- Ownership Extremist: You view it works on my machine as a failure. You own the outcome, not just the output.
- Communication Bridge: You speak Doctor, Designer, and Engineer fluently, translating clinical needs into technical specifications.
- Pragmatic Perfectionist: You know when to ship a v1 to get feedback and when to build robust, scalable architecture for the long haul.
How you'll make an impact:
- End-to-End Feature Ownership: Lead the development of complex features (e.g., a new intake workflow or provider dashboard) from concept to launch.
- Product Definition: Collaborate with the Product & Engineering leadership to define requirements, user flows, and success metrics. You _are_ the Product Manager for your scope.
- Technical Architecture: Design scalable, maintainable full-stack solutions (React, Node.js, Python) that integrate seamlessly with our EHR and AI services.
- Program Management: Manage the timeline and delivery of your projects, coordinating across design, clinical ops, and other engineering squads.
- User Feedback Loops: Watch clinicians use your software, look at the data, and iterate rapidly. You are responsible for the success of the feature, not just the code.
- Mentorship: Elevate the team's product sense, teaching junior engineers how to think about user value and business impact.
The basics you'll need:
- 8+ years of full-stack engineering experience, with a track record of shipping complex web/mobile applications from scratch.
- Principal Level Technical Depth: Ability to architect systems, choose the right tools, and debug complex production issues independently.
- Product/Program Experience: Demonstrated experience managing projects, defining roadmaps, or working in a role where you had significant product influence (e.g., Founder, Technical PM).
- Modern Stack Proficiency: Expert in React/TypeScript, Node.js/Python, and cloud infrastructure (GCP, CDN, IAP).
- Data Fluency: Comfortable using SQL or analytics tools (Tableau, Snowflake, Looker, Databricks) to answer your own questions about user behavior.
Nice to have:
- Experience as a Founder or early employee at a startup.
- Background in Design/UX (Figma skills are a plus).
- Experience in Healthcare/Health Tech, understanding clinical workflows or FHIR data models.
- Experience with LLM/AI integration into user-facing products
Why Blackbird is unique:
- Frontier Technology: We are building an AI-native operating system for healthcare, not just another telemedicine app.
- High Autonomy: As a Product Engineer, you have the freedom to define the solution, not just implement it.
- Leadership Impact: You will report directly to technology executives and be a key voice in company-wide strategic decisions.
- Flexible schedule – set your own hours
- Supportive work culture
Benefits
- Medical, Dental & Vision coverage (available on day 1 of employment)
- 401k (with a company match)
- Employer-paid life insurance coverage
- Generous paid time off
- Opportunities for career growth
Salary Range
$125,000 - $140,000 USD
