Director of Engineering

The Director of Engineering is a vital role within the Blenheim Chalcot portfolio and Modulr. We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated Director of Engineering (DoE) to lead a high energy product engineering team and drive the development of our payment platform solutions. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in building and managing high-performing engineering teams, expertise in modern technologies including AWS, and fair understanding of payment schemes. They must be well versed with designing high throughput low latency systems. This is a critical leadership role that will span teams across multiple locations, and the candidate must have experience in driving geographically dispersed teams. You will gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced and progressive environment, where you will support us in building our next generation of GenAI enabled tech businesses.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Leadership and Strategy:
    • Lead and inspire a team of engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, velocity and self-governing teams.
    • Develop and execute the engineering department's strategic roadmap, aligning with overall company goals and objectives.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define product requirements and ensure successful delivery of projects on time and within budget.
    • Working with leaders upwards and sideways to ensure that products are delivered successfully
  • Technical Expertise:
    • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the engineering team, ensuring the adoption of best practices and industry standards.
    • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and trends, identifying opportunities to leverage them for competitive advantage.
    • Maintain a deep understanding of payment schemes, security protocols, and regulatory requirements.
    • Ensure the development and maintenance of high-performance, scalable, and secure systems that can handle high volumes of transactions with low latency.
  • Operational Excellence:
    • Oversee the full software development lifecycle, from design and development to testing and deployment.
    • Implement robust quality assurance processes to ensure the reliability and stability of our systems.
    • Monitor system performance and identify areas for optimization.
    • Manage the engineering budget and resource allocation.

About you

The ideal candidate will have a track-record in delivering results in a fast-moving business and hence be comfortable with change and uncertainty. Excellent stakeholder management experience is essential to being successful in this role.

Qualifications, technical and or professional experience required to be successful in the role

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • 15+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven experience in building and managing high-performing engineering teams.
  • Strong technical background in modern technologies, including AWS, cloud computing, microservices architecture, and containerization.
  • Experience in designing and developing high throughput low latency systems.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience of working with payment companies and/or fintech
  • Deep understanding of payment schemes, security protocols, and regulatory requirements.
