People Operations Lead

The People Operations Lead Role
We’re looking for a versatile and dedicated People Operations Lead to support our incredible team of ~40 in a startup environment.
You are a pragmatic problem-solver, with excellent judgment and strong interpersonal skills. In this role, you will leverage both your talent for process and your instinct for people to bring impactful programs to life. You are comfortable navigating sensitive and sometimes challenging conversations, engaging with colleagues across the organization, and tackling complex projects and administrative detail with equal grace.
Block’s People Operations Lead will bring a strong ownership approach to all areas of the People function, including: employee lifecycle, performance management, operations and compliance, HR systems and employee records management, oversight of payroll and benefits administration through our PEO, and employee engagement.
This is a full-time position reporting to the VP Finance & Business Operations, and requiring a hybrid work schedule: 3+ days/week in our Brooklyn, NY office.
What you will do:
- Build and manage key People programs and processes, including employee onboarding and offboarding, leaves and accommodations, and performance management
- Own our HR system/PEO (Justworks), overseeing payroll and benefits administration, and ensuring data integrity; maintain employee records
- Serve as the trusted first point of contact for employees and managers on everything from policy questions, to benefits escalations, to sensitive employee relations matters
- Ensure our People processes and policies are effective, efficient, compliant, and applied consistently
- Support a thriving community by planning periodic employee events and offsites
- Distribute impactful employee communications on the above topics, both in writing and in team meetings
What you bring to the role:
- 6+ years of experience in a People/HR role, particularly as a Generalist or HRBP
- Exceptional organizational and project management skills
- Hands-on experience with payroll and benefits
- Proven track record collaborating with both management and employees of all levels
- Expertise with HR systems and reporting; comfortable interpreting data
- General knowledge of employment law and HR compliance, and practical experience applying this knowledge
- Adaptability, empathy, and a team-player attitude
Block wants all employees to be supported in their personal and professional development, so we take a comprehensive approach to compensation and benefits. The initial salary for this position is expected to range from $125,000 to $150,000 for a NY-based position. Actual compensation will depend on numerous factors such as: experience, knowledge and skills, qualifications, location, and other job-related factors.
