About the Opportunity
We are seeking a proactive, hands-on Senior Environmental Specialist to join our “Compliance, Permits, and Environment” Team. This role takes a holistic, 360-degree approach to daily compliance—ensuring our operations protect the external ecosystem while maintaining the regulatory alignment of our internal operational infrastructure. While our immediate focus is securing our secondary permits, establishing site compliance and environmental management system during construction, we aim to take our first practical steps toward a broader Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework in the future operation at Nussir. The candidate will also be part of a broader environmental team through our parent company, Blue Moon Metals.
Key Responsibilities
1. Core Environmental & Multi-Sector Compliance
- External Environment: Monitor, sample, and report on dust, noise, leaching potential, water management, and the handling of waste rock to ensure absolute protection of the surrounding wilderness.
- Internal Environment: Bridge the gap between engineering and environment by auditing and ensuring internal plant compliance across electrical, structural, and mechanical systems.
- Marine & Sea Tailings Management: Manage, sample, and closely monitor conditions surrounding our permitted STP (sea tailings placement) and marine disposal infrastructure within the high standards set by our discharge permit.
- Incidents & Training: Investigate onsite environmental incidents, implement corrective actions, and champion environmental, community-awareness, and environmental training for all site personnel.
- Permitting & Reporting: Prepare, review, and submit routine environmental reports, regulatory filings, and secondary permit applications to Norwegian authorities.
2. Community Care & Long-Term Frameworks
- Community Consideration: Embed genuine consideration for local people and communities into all daily environmental monitoring, operational decisions, and site policies.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Build and maintain strong, transparent, and mutually respectful relationships with local authorities, community stakeholders, and regional regulatory bodies.
- Future Planning: Contribute foundational compliance data and site insights as the company begins taking practical, incremental steps toward building an ESG framework over time.
Desired Qualifications
1. Education & Experience
- Degree: Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, HSE or an equivalent technical discipline.
- Industry Background: Proven experience in industrial or mining compliance operations; experience supporting rigorous environmental audits and regulatory inspections is highly valued.
- Specialized Knowledge: Strong familiarity with Nordic-specific environmental permitting and Norwegian regulatory frameworks is required.
- Community Mindset: A proven professional track record or strong personal alignment demonstrating deep empathy, respect, and successful communication with local communities and local stakeholders.
- Marine Tailings: Prior experience managing or sampling sea tailings placement systems is a significant asset.
2. Skills & Core Competencies
- Communication: Fluent, professional-level verbal and written communication skills in both Norwegian and English. Must be capable of translating complex compliance issues clearly and respectfully to both site teams and local community members.
- Systems & Tools: Proficiency with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can be helpful and experience using established digital databases or management systems to track regulatory obligations.
- Aspirational Frameworks: A general familiarity with international frameworks like TSM (Towards Sustainable Mining), IFC Performance Standards, or general ESG reporting concepts is a plus, but expert-level implementation experience is not required.
- Mobility: A valid Class B driver's license is recommended for site travel.
