Position Overview

We are looking for a Mine Safety Engineer, for the Nussir Project.  The project is currently advancing through full-scale underground construction and preparing to move into the operations phase in late 2027.

In this dual-phase role, you will initially oversee safety during underground construction, including horizontal and vertical development.  As the project transitions, you will establish, scale, and manage the day-to-day operational safety systems for a long-life, underground asset.

Key Responsibilities

Construction Phase Execution (Immediate focus)

  • Contractor Safety Management: Partner with and audit major engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors having deliveries underground to ensure alignment with corporate and local safety cultures.
  • Excavation & Structural Oversight: Support mining team, including contractors,  in performing  structural and ground control safety assessments along the growing decline, conveyor tunnels, and silo tunnel networks.
  • Commissioning Risk Analysis: Lead Pre-Start Health and Safety Reviews (PHSR) and risk assessments for the installation and no-load commissioning of fixed and semi fixed machinery (mobile/semimobile crushers, conveyor belts, main pumping station installation and other).

Operational Phase Strategy (Long-term focus)

  • Underground Systems Management: Design, calibrate, and monitor critical safety systems including mine ventilation shafts, toxic gas detection arrays, blast clearances, and autonomous/collision warning equipment.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Interpret and ensure strict adherence to Norwegian mineral and labor laws under the Norwegian Directorate of Mines (Direktoratet for mineralforvaltning) and Arbeidstilsynet (Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority).
  • Culture & Training:  Ensure, and support development and delivery of customized safety training programs for both underground production crews and surface maintenance teams to foster an incident-free mindset.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Author, test, and adapt the underground emergency response plan, mine rescue protocols, and evacuation drill strategies.
  • Incident Management: Lead all incident and near-miss root cause investigations, mapping corrective action pathways to ensure zero repetition.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, or Occupational Health & Safety.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5–8 years of experience in heavy industrial environments, with at least 3 years directly focused on underground mine operations or underground civil tunneling.
  • Phase Exposure: Proven experience navigating the transition of an industrial asset from heavy construction/handover through to steady-state operations is highly valued.

Technical & Regulatory Competencies

  • Local Legislation: Solid familiarity with Norwegian health and safety regulations (Arbeidsmiljøloven) and Nordic mining practices is highly advantageous.
  • Industry Standards: Deep understanding of international machinery safety standards and risk management methodologies (e.g., ISO 45001, IEC 61508).
  • Languages: Business-level fluency in English is mandatory; professional competency in Norwegian or in Swedish is a distinct advantage for local contractor coordination.

Personal Attributes

  • Strong leadership capability with the emotional intelligence to manage safety cultures across diverse multicultural contractor teams.
  • Exceptional communication skills, capable of transparently conveying safety data to both executive management and on-site laborers.
