Software Engineer — SKY WATCH Platform

Location: Reston, VA (Hybrid Remote Available)
Clearance Preferred: Secret (or eligibility to obtain)
Employment Type: Full-Time

About the Role

Blue Sky Innovators is seeking Software Engineers (2–3 positions available) to help build and scale SKY WATCH — our next-generation, AI-driven, multi-sensor anomaly detection platform. SKY WATCH fuses real-time video analytics, BLE/RSSI detection, and audio transcript analysis to deliver predictive security alerting for operational and critical infrastructure environments.

As a Software Engineer, you will work on critical ingestion services, API development, and data processing pipelines. You will play a key role in developing real-time streaming capabilities, robust backend systems, and highly responsive front-end interfaces. You’ll collaborate closely with Machine Learning Engineers, Product Managers, and the Lead Software Architect to deliver scalable, secure, and mission-ready solutions.

This is an opportunity to build enterprise-grade software that makes a real-world impact across national security and critical industries.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain Kafka ingestion services for real-time sensor and media data.
  • Build and manage RESTful APIs using .NET Core and Python-based microservices.
  • Develop and optimize data processing layers, enabling real-time anomaly detection and alerting.
  • Contribute to the front-end development using RAZOR Pages and React frameworks for responsive, operator-focused dashboards.
  • Integrate backend services with data stores such as InfluxDB, PostgreSQL, and S3 object storage.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code following best practices for security and performance.
  • Implement robust error handling, logging, and monitoring across services.
  • Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and Agile ceremonies (sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives).
  • Collaborate with DevOps and Cybersecurity teams to ensure secure, containerized deployments (Docker/Kubernetes).
  • Support continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines and automated testing practices.

Requirements

  • 3–7 years of professional software development experience in production environments.
  • Proficiency in C# (.NET Core) and Python for service development.
  • Strong experience building Kafka-based ingestion services and event-driven architectures.
  • Skilled in building and consuming REST APIs (OpenAPI/Swagger standards).
  • Hands-on experience with RAZOR Pages and/or React front-end development.
  • Solid understanding of microservices architecture, message queues, and scalable backend systems.
  • Experience working with time-series data and relational databases (e.g., InfluxDB, PostgreSQL).
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies (Docker) and working knowledge of Kubernetes-based deployments.
  • Commitment to writing secure, high-quality, testable code.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic Agile environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting DoD, IC, or critical infrastructure technology projects.
  • Familiarity with gRPC services and streaming API patterns.
  • Knowledge of secure coding practices, OAuth2/OpenID Connect authentication, and data encryption best practices.
  • Exposure to AI/ML integration (e.g., calling inference services from backend APIs).
  • Clearance (Secret or higher) or eligibility to obtain clearance is highly preferred.

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

A "recently separated veteran" means any veteran during the three-year period beginning on the date of such veteran's discharge or release from active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval, or air service.

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
